Okay I'm kind of lost here. I just got this game a few days ago and i haven't been able to stop playing it, however I get to where I have building bridges under my technologies, but I can't build a bridge over any water without cheating, and even cheating, change it to land, build the bridge, change it back to water, and the bridge isn't usable, is there anyway to build a bridge that works??

Welcome to Civfanatics.

Requirements for a successful bridge: 1) have the tech Bridge building. 2) have a settler or engineer, 3) place said settler or engineer on a river (sometimes the map places a like or ocean space -- bridges won’t go there :( ) 4) settler or engineer builds “road” on river (will look like a road when successfully completed -- it also takes a little longer).

well that sux, i wish i could build over water other than rivers, rivers dont even seem like they exist anymore once you get far into the game.this method of travel and technology concept is a little different than real life where all peace loving nations share technology, these secretive bastards hold it all in.

If you have a tech they do not have (and they have one you dont) they will often offer to trade. If you make an alliance they will beg for your techs. No one gives for free, except when you are "Pathetic" because you are playing OCC and the AI feels sorry for you...

"real life where all peace loving nations share technology" - what "real life" are you talking about? Everyone is trying to make the most benefit from small tech advantages. Ever heard of the IAEC? Nuclear Non-Proliferation? I guess you could put forward Environmentalism and Recycling...

"Peace-loving nations" is a late 20th century political term. If you study a little ancient history, it is pretty bloody. Just ask Ghengis Khan, Alex the Great, Caesar, Eric the Red, or even Napolean!! Even in the 20th century, after the bloodbath of world war I, there was Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, and Idi Amean. These gents were not exactly peace-loving.....

In the game, at first contact, the AI will always trade with you if it has anything to trade with. Most of the time that you get a negative answer, it means the AI has nothing to trade with (at least, thats been my experience on diety level).

Elephant U: they do give for free when your power rating is supreme and you demand tribute.

What's so bad about rivers? They give a +1 trade to all squares and a +50% additional defense bonus to any units on a river square. They are critical in order to build a SSC and you can get 4 trade arrows from a rivered square with a superhighway in Rep/Demo or Desp/Mon/Commie/Fundy celebration.

A tip: If you need deseperately a bridge and have not the technology, you can build a city on the square you want a briged. A city alwais contain irrigation and road (and later, farms and railway) on his square, so you obtain a briged by building a city :D

Yes, in ancient times, building a city in the right spot enables you to connect your road network to the river high-speed movement network.

Blitztech, I use ships as bridges over water. Say you have Triremes, which can move 3. Put cities 3 apart, across the strait from each other, and try that. With Railroads and transports and modern stuff, you can move a unit as far across the world in one turn as you need.

Yes i have done that in one time, i have berlin and bonn across a river from one another two spaces, and on land i have to go around in a big U shape to get to it, so i put a transport ship between the two to just sit there and send people to that side
