Hey guys

If I capture someones ancient forest, then it gets burnt down, will it regrow as ancient forest even though I'm not FoL?

Also I've been wondering, shouldn't really old forests just convert to ancient forests over time anyway (regardless of whether or not you are FoL). Maybe FoL could get another benefit like +1 gold from forests or something else more suitable?

I'm pretty sure that Ancient Forests can't catch fire. Makes it a lot harder to walk through enemy FOL because of the Treants...I think that it's not just how old the forest is, but that fact that it is revered, not cut at all. Much like a virgin forest, never cut, as opposed to a forest that is trimmed and cut in a sustainable manner.

You cannot burn ancient forests? Cool! Although if they are forests which have never been cut then surely ALL forests would start as ancient forests.

I just think that others should be able to get these forests. I play AV a lot and always like the idea of having a region similar to Felwood from WOW :D

Some kinda of evil haunted forest would be cool for hell terrain instead of just burning away....

You can burn them, it is just harder. I think that there is a percent chance for smoke to spread to tiles adjacent to fire, and a percent chance for the smoke to go out or change to fire. Those percentages are adjusted slightly in favor of keeping the Ancient Forests.

I also agree that there is more to an Ancient Forest than just being really old. But they should be able to appear around Nature Nodes and a few of the Unique Features IMO (though that could be a bit difficult to code).

Felwood felwood felwood! :p Im thinking of founding FoL in my games just to get ancient forests :D

I only actually want them for aesthetic purposes

Non-elves should be able to build lumbermills on them. I don't think this would be overpowered as elves can already build mines, cottages or farms on them. It would reward non-elves who play FoL 'properly'. I think if i was a non-elf race with FoL i would cut down the ancient forests for other improvements anyway.

I.

1. Are you sure? So when elves build mines on hills, they are clearing the forests first? I didn't think so. They can definatey build mines on forested tiles- i am pretty sure they don't clear them- we should both check.
2. Me. At least i didn't cut the forest down to build a farm or something.

1. Elves can't build mines on forests.
2. What sort of FoL follower would build lumbermill in an Ancient Forest?? (roleplay-wise)

I'm playing dark elf FOL in a game on Creation right now and I have mines all over the place. Even on ancient forest.

I do not like the idea of lumbermill in an ancient forest... Is it ancient or cut and regrown?
But for the balance resons, we need an improvement that non-elven players can build in ancient forest. +1 food and possible treant defender is just not enough to justify keeping it.
I personaly added forester improvement. It is easy (I used forest preserve base in fact) and works fine. Certainly it is not too powerfull, especially compared with elven towns in ancient forest ;)

As for the idea that all forests should start as ancient ones - FfH is just after an Ice Age. A really bad Ice Age, so I doubt there were many trees left.
But a few spots with it would be nice - like at Yggdrasil. Or to turn forest to ancient one at nature node. It would add a nice flavour, but I am not sure how hard is it to code - and if it is worth the effort

Good point about the age of ice. I still think that an ancient forest should appear on a non-improved forest tile if you leave it long enough. After playing as the Svartalfar a bit in the past I can confirm that elves can build mines without clearing forest.

Btw, does nobody here ever keep forest for health reasons?

I think that in hell terrain forests or ancient forests should turn into dark forests or something, with a chance of spawning a demon when you walk through.

Maybe not just in hell terrain. Evil empires should be able to get corrupted forests of sorts. In many of my games I use compact enforeced due to the size of my maps. Hell terrain would kill the game! lol

1. Ok, I think I last played Ljos in 0.25, so I'm a bit behind and you got it right.
2. I wouldn't build a single lumbermill, but maybe I'm twisted by playing Wood Elves in Warhammer :) Geez, I would even kill any trespassers :D
