Buying new graphics card...

Now thats just rubbish.

The GTX570 (which I have btw) is 10-15% better than the 560Ti, but it crosses the line where you are starting to pay more to get less. In many ways the 560Ti is in the sweet spot, and it is probably NVidias best card on the market atm.

Thanks for that link, I stand corrected - still, the 460 is a fair bit cheaper than 560ti and when the OP seems to have such a tight budget he might need to go for the cheaper option, even if it's not as future proof. I was surprised at the large advantage the 560ti had at 1680x1050 compared to it's much smaller lead at 1920x1200.

I myself run a factory OC'd 460 1GB, with a 1900x1080p monitor, and it plays the game absolutely fine on maximum, though.

Maybe you were thinking of the 550Ti. It came out as a direct competitor to the 5770, and was meant to close the gap between the 450 and the GTX460 768mb card. So it has less performance than a GTX460.

As for the OP, he needs to take his PSU into account, and I think he has a choice between the 5770 and the 550Ti. If he plays alot of Civ V then the 550Ti is probably worth paying the extra 15-20$ for.

gtx 460 768 is a good card, but it holds me back at 1680x1050. I would definitely recommend a 1gb card at 1680 or higher resolution, even the gtx 460 se might end up being better.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Currently I have 450 W Power supply. I think I would probably get 5770 or GTX 460. So would there be any need to buy a new power supply or 450W is enough ?

And I just checked ATI 6850. PC Bro gave it more stars than GTX 460 & it is also about 2000 Rs cheaper.

I would use Newegg's Power Supply calculator. Just select your components and it will give you a rough estimate of how many Watts you will need. I tend to chose +50W above the minimum.

**Edit: I took the liberty of crunching some numbers since you posted some specs earlier in the thread and the calculator rec'd 436 W. You also considered upping your RAM, so you may have to invest in a new PSU.

Thanks for the link. :goodjob:
Edit : I don't think I would need a new power supply. I would ask the salesman when upgrading my computer. :)
And I think I'll go for ATI because it is cheaper & consumes less power. A slight reduction in graphics won't hurt me. So far I think HD 6850 would be a good card because it is better than HD 5770, newer & in a reasonable range of price.

My 5770 is running CiV just fine on max settings. (with a i5 750) Screen 1920x1080

You may want to future proof and get a better card, but if a 5770 hits the sweet spot for you go for it.

For civ5 i would suggest getting nvidia card because they are much better at tessellation than AMD cards. Nvidia cards seems to run pretty hot even with civ but the answer to that (and also to why you should consider nvidia over AMD in civ5) can be found from here: http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=31520674&postcount=28

EDIT: I have GTX 470 wich is fairly close to GTX 560's performance. It runs civ5 with everything ( I mean really everything) maxed out on 1900x1200 on any sized map.

The problem with Nvidia is that it is more expensive & I would probably need to get a new power supply which would in increase the expenses even more. :p Also the climate in my country is quite hot (40+ degree celsius in summer) so Nvidia would probably get heat up quickly. I can compromise a bit on graphics as i3 is already a limiting factor.

Oh yeah, you gave your specs in the first page, sorry, I sort of ‘speed readed’ this thread so I propably missed it, well that’s just me :D.

Well yeah, if you read what I linked then you surely know that the i3 will most likely be the limiting factor even when talking just about civ5 GPU performance. That and also when you take in concideration the temperatures of nvidia under stress and compare it to the temperatures in your country (not forgetting the power supply fact), I also think you better go with the AMD on this one.

Uhh over 40C? That’s propably the temperature where I start to melt down . Here in Finland we have just over 30C tops and when that happens I dream that it would be winter again and I would be outside with my dogs and the temperature would be like minus 26C or something :goodjob:.

I've another question. What is the difference between 128 bit card & 256 bit card ?

Thats the GPU memory, older cards had those kind of numbers in them.

Few years back the temperature reached about 49 degree Celsius. Coupled with load shedding that was a killer.

Well I am sure that is not GPU memory. Memory is usually given in MB or GB with type DDR3, DDR5 etc. But there is another thing given in Bits. For example 5770 is 128 bits with 1GB DDR5 however 6850 is 256bits 1GB DDR5. So what is the difference between them (apart from price :p) ?

Yep my bad, then I suppose you are talking about the Memory Interface Width. Therefore that number means how wide the memory lane is, the wider the lane is, the more traffic it can support = better performance.
