C.A. - Civilholics Anonymous

If that's the case, one should be able to finish the turn they're on, especially if they stock up on units like I do (in one game I have going now, I have 500+ Immortals...)

I have to share the worst CIV addiction story I've ever heard. Don't remember if I saw it here when Civ3 first came out or in a news story. Not sure what version the addiction was on, but it was before hotseat was an option:

A husband and wife both got addicted. They had so many fights over the one computer that they decided to set a timer and take turns--precisely one hour. This worked fine until one night the wife had to play, All Together Now, "One More Turn". With a few minutes to go on the timer, she tricked her husband into stepping outside and locked him out of the house. She let him back in 4-5 hours later when it got dark.

Are you the husband?

Ah, I remember the good ol' days. '93/'94. . . I'd go up to the University of Kansas computer center and play Civ up there. There was another Civver up there, we'd play all night. I'd fall asleep and be woken up when my head fell back, jerking me awake. . . .too poor to own a computer, but by god I had CIV!

Ah, KU... I have a friend that attends KU who I've been trying to get into Civ, but he's busy with 2 jobs and school, never gets enough time to sit down and get into a new game, especially one such as Civ.

I just saw you're in KC. . .cool! Need more KC people here, I there. There are a bunch of us, PugLover, BomberEscort, and a few others I don't recall. . .

I haven't been up there (the computer center) in years. I go up to the campus about once a year. We drive through it and show it to the kids. . . they love it. Beautiful campus! The kids aunt had season passes to the football games, they saw a lot of college ball this year. . .

Ah well. . .back to the subject. . . ;)

Check out this thread, Too Old To Play. It's been around a while, and has a good breakdown of the ages of gamers who play civ.

For me, Civ has a lasting power beyond anything I've seen. I've played a lot of games, and have some great memories of some, like F-19 Stealth Fighter, Lode Runner, LHX Attack Chopper. . . but Civ is the one I keep coming back to. To be honest, I have no real interest in playing any of the games I played ten years ago. The closest I've come is Space Trader, for the palm, which could be compared to Elite.

I think Civ 1 grabbed a lot of us way back when, and we're still playing the franchise. Of course, each new release brings that many more into the fold. . .

Civ I got me way back... 10 years ago...

I still can't believe I've been playin civ since I was 9...

We've got at least one confirmed player in his eighties, so I guess even though I've got a decade on you we can both throw our diapers around, huh?

Back when I purchased Civ3 (last Dec) I was living the bachelor life, civ all day and work at night. The day I realized I had an addiction happened on a weekend so I didn't have to work.

I got home from my shift at 7:30 in the morning and started a new game as the Egyptians. I was so engrossed in the game I didn't realize that the sun had set and I had yet to eat. At 10:50 pm, I hopped in my car and headed for the closest drive thru to get some food (I was still in my pajamas). After eating a greaseball burger I resumed playing. "Just one more turn" I told myself. After what I thought to be an hour or two at the most, I shut down the game and looked at the clock on my computer.

It read 4:58 am.

My name is Tyler, and I am an addict.

After the Nintendo 16 came out I quit playing console games because the controlers started having buttons like "R1" and "L2" and "XXO+Left+right+e=mc2" and the games started getting fluffy. I wanted somthing that could actualy develop. So ever since my freshmen year of high school I've been at one point or another playing 1 of 3 games, Heroes, Starfleet Command, and Civilization. As long as they keep coming out with those I'll be happy for a long time.

My question is why should we be Anonymous? Personally I am proud of being a Civiholic. Virtually everyone I know knows about this game as I talk about it a lot. All of my friends obviously know and play Civ3. In conclusion, I am a Civilholic Loud and proud.

No, I'm not the husband from that story. But I started with Civ1 back around '92, if I remember correctly. I've read thousands of civ addict stories. That one just really stood out. :)

I'm totally with ya man, just let me finish up this game...

My name is Mr. Cackle and I have not been playing CIV for 2 days now. I can't take it. I left the game at my dad's house and I fear that I will not be able to play till christmas! I am already having jitters and fantasizing about launching that nuke at the stupid fascist Spanish, or finishing off those insane Vikings, etc.

Hopefully I can somehow get the game, or else I think I will just have to resort to fortifying on the couch and pillaging my refrigerator!

I am NeonInfusion. I am a complete loser. I couldn't think of a name for my account, so I looked at a blank CD brand and thought of my name. I tremble when I can't play Civ. I have dreams of taking out the stupid back-stabbing Carthaginians, or negotiating furs out of the Chinese. I have not yet gotten Conquests. This also makes me a loser. I cackle when I destroy a civ, and I cry when my long and faithful trading/warring partner gets wiped out.

If there are any comments on my level of loser-ness, please reply.

Ah, the good old days of playing Civ in college. I remember back on ~93 at Valpo working "help desk support" in the computer lab. Civ was the best thing for passing the long inane hours behind the desk between showing people how to fix their WordPerfect documents, waiting for the AppleNet to lock up, and refilling the paper trays in the laser printer.

"Sure, I'll be there in just one more turn... I mean just a second... I've got something running here."

Does it get any better than being paid to play Civ?
