Hi guys,
I have a question about language translations over the mod C2C,

there is already a german Translation avaible?

it is at all a german Translation give?

No there is not currently a German translation of c2c there is only a polish and French one

If you would like to I think it would be a great if you could do it.
 
Hello - sorry for necroing, but think here it fits best :) I am willing to start / modify the german translation. Had already a short glance over the files, and before starting I wanted to ask...

-) is there a consequent use of terms already, or just translated (also in other languages) like it seems best fitting in the context? Does anyone have good advices, how to keep the consistence at best in the overwhelming mass of entries ?

-) shall I stick primarily to the original Civ4-BTS terms or isnt it that strict ?

I see it is really a heap of work to do, and I hope there is someone kindly offering to answer questions regarding details or giving explanations, when I have problems in understanding :mischief:

In C2C reuse of old threads is good.

As far as I know the people doing the French and Italian translations are doing just that translating as seems best in the context.

It is best to do a bit at a time and get it into the SVN, often by posting your translations here and asking me to put it in. Even doing a little bit is appreciated as it all adds up and improves the game.
 
thanks a lot for the fast answer - will start tomorrow with it all. Just another question... in the civ4-documentation for xml text is mentioned male / female as option. Does it make sense to declare something as neuter (as this is the third gender in german) or wont such get used ?

edit: see, this is the first stupid question. Will try and find it out on myself *chuckle*
 
I think you can avoid the neuter article by using other pronoms (?).
For example "Das Feuer brannte dein Theater nieder" instead of "Das Feuer brannte das Theater nieder".
Same would be true if using "ein/eine" instead of "der/die/das".
 
Not that easily, such rules are not defined in the Text Files. I will just try it out, worst that could happen is, that it reads grammatically not correct, when the game adds the strings together - which does not affect understanding.
When I get to those files, I will have a deeper look at it and I already have some ideas for this.

What disturbs me at the moment more is the äöüÄÖÜß in the texts *grins*. I hope I get a working automation on this, because its.... not funny to do this on my own.
 
the replacing of these chars with & # 228; (without spaces) for example. For the beginning just search/replace will do, and when it annoys me too much, I will find a better solution. Minor annoyance ;) but thanks for asking :)
 
I think ae, oe, ue and ss should do the trick, even though I personally don't like to read them this way :P But anyhow, I'd prefer to play this game in english nevertheless...
I do also play in english despite being a german native speaker.

What i wan to see in future revisions is the use of the original city names.

Cologne is no german city, Köln is. So is Munich which is named in RL München.
The italian capital is Roma, not Rome, Rom or any other description.

And the list can be continued over and over.

Take the portuguese city list as example: the city names are indeed the names of the cities as they are called and written in Portugal.

Sounds very good, very immersive. But in the moment where this country uses an own script or even other letters, it will get problematic. And thinking of for example Arabic, there is no "common substitution" of Letters to be used for. So there would be limitations.

Well, the same goes for chinese / japanese and other scripts not based on latin alphabet.
There a phonetic equivalent is fine.
Think of chinas capital, which was a long tine known as Peking while you now have it as Bejing.

Of course there's no problem in renaming it.

I was more under the impression that one should use the original games wihtout any need to alter the game names into the real ones. ;)
 
I solved this issue with a regular expression, which replaced all English city names with their German counterpart (I too don't like having Cologne or Munich or Vienna either, especially since you cannot skip a name by renaming a city after it has been founded).
You can do something similar for the umlauts, e.g. write the text normally and then apply the regexp to all the files you've made changes to. There are several editors that allow search & replace over multiple files, I myself know of UltraEdit and Sublime Text. Maybe Notepad++ as well, but I haven't checked.

Please don't use ae, ue, ss, etc. as a substitute. It's horrible to read, although I myself will never touch the German localization.

The special chars issue is not that important as I thought. It accepts the special chars too (at least in the civpedia, and at least the usual ones like äöüß for sure), so I still stick with the replacement - but its not gamebreaking if its not done perfect. And yes, think npp can do such too. Regex is a more clean solution, of course.
Many things I learn while doing it, still have to learn to shut up instead of thinking loud xD

For the issue with the neuter gender - this issue can be considered solved now too.

No worries, no ae-substitution. Promised. And I am not very young anymore, so partly it might get "old spelling", but then, about such I dont think that much.
And the german names of the cities overall... well, thats basically the point of a localization, isnt it ?
For immersion I can imagine to maybe have an option for such, or an alternative file to simply exchange. Have not yet had a look over city names, where and how they are stored. Still its not that important too.
My primary motivation is... I want to get rid of options with a dot or whitespace instead of telling me what it does, a working Civpedia where I can see the names of the things to click on, even if there might be still english texts in between.

oh and saving in UTF-8... dont know if it would work then. No experiences with the consequences, so I did not change the encoding the files already had.
