C3C and running stuff in the background

I've been playing Civ on Macs from before I was a Mac convert, from the time of Civ I. When I got my first Mac (a Performa, back in '96), I got Civ II shortly after. Played Civ II and Call to Power on a Powerbook G3, got Civ III for the dome iMac, and am now playing C3C on a second-generation Powerbook G4.

I used to have crashes with Civ II and Call to Power on the Pbook G3 if I ran anything in the background, so I've developed the habit of shutting down all programmes before I launch. If I did that, though, I ran into far fewer problems. My question's this. What's the likelihood of C3C crashing if I'm uploading stuff to my server in the background?

I'm going to try and see in a minute, but wondered if anybody had any experiences to share.

Cheers.

Hi, Welcome :wavey:

I normally have the following Application activities running continuously on my Mac. Civ3 has to live amongst them, and seems happy to do so:

Transmit is currently uploading 6oo modified Civ4 GOTM save files in the background. Mail reads every 15 minutes. FoldingAtHome is processing some humungous protein that's going to take a week. Skype and Adium are watching for IM connections.

This is one of the reasons I use the best desktop OS on the planet.

There's a 0.00000000001% chance that doing anything in the background would cause Civ3 to crash. Under OSX, each task runs in its own protected memory space, insulated from other misbehaving programs. This wasn't true with OS9, where any rogue app could bring down the system at a moment's notice.

I'd go full steam ahead with doing things in the background under OSX (I do it all the time).
