Yes (for battles between human players units, against barbarians it's optional).
Minimum information required is:
Units involved in each battle and battle outcome (and if it isn't already obvious to the two players involved also the location).

OK, then...I have something to report, which Hasdrubal Barca may notice even before reading this post:

A great battle outside of Hattusas occured: A hittite warrior band exited the city at night, crossed the great river, and ambushed the Spanish band of warriors just on the other side. Casualties were extremely high, but the gamble paid off, as now, our lands are free from any stray enemy units.
