The plot: whenever I try to launch Conquest (with the latest patch), the game hangs right after the splash screen appears. Windows then issues the standard error message "program has encountered a problem and must be shut down" (or something to that effect). The name of the program is ~e5d141.tmp.

The setting: Conquests worked fine before that, and I made no modifications to the Conquests directory since then. No major software has been installed in the meantime, and my hardware remained the same. The .exe file has not been modified. I have 2.7 gb of freespace on my harddrive, so it isn't the problem either.

The characters: My computer is based on Windows XP Home (no service pack installed), DirectX 9.0; Windows is in French, and Civ 3 in English. My actual hardware should not be needed, as the game worked like a charm on the same computer.

If you have any clue about the denouement, please let me know. Thanks in advance!

Are you trying to load a save from before the patch? That will cause the program to crash.

I am not trying to load any game; I cannot get that far, as the game crashes a second after I click on the game exe (just as the splash/loading screen appears).

Oh, looks like I had forgotten the basic solution: reboot and see what happens. It now appears to be working.
