Can class 0 planets EVER be colonized?

I'm new to the game...started with a small galaxy...needed more usable planets. Saw somewhere along the tech tree a tech allowing the player "to colonize even a barren rock". Spent lots of research getting there, only to find that my colony ships STILL wouldn't colonize a cl. 0 planet.

What am I missing?

I don't have the expansion packs, so something could be different there, but I don't think class zero worlds can ever be colonized. There wouldn't be any point even if you could, since they'd have no green tiles to build on.

Occasionally a random event will boost a class 0 to a habitable planet (I remember one random event boosted all the planets in half a dozen sectors by 10 points - including all the class 0 ones, which gave some rather ridiculous clumps of habitable planets).

Thanks for the reply, MrC. In the interim I found the answer, and confirmed yours. What that tech allows is to colonize the occasional "barren world".

BTW, enjoyed your thread on corporations in BtS (probably my favorite game ever). Civ IV is the only reason I picked up GalCiv2, frankly. As no longer a novice at either, how would you compare them?

Hey there pmarvin

With the barren colonisation, its only for "barren" worlds. These worlds have a barren tag against them, much like the toxic world, heavy gravity, radioactive etc etc.

For Class zero planets, they can never be colonised. Let me know if you need clarification.

In addition, Class zero means they have zero tiles you could build on (Planet Quality is the count AFTER soil enhancement, habitat improvement, terraforming) so colonizing them is by definition impossible.

If you need more planets:
- colonize the types Strato mentioned in his post
- use influence starbases to flip enemy planets
- invade enemy planets

As always, feel free to post more questions...

What would happen if you got that random event increasing all planets levels by 10 and a planet went over the maximum number of tiles on the planet screen?

I'm not sure that this is possible. The highest quality I've seen before such events is 26. I can't say from the top of my head but I think there is room for much more than 36 tiles? Interesting point though, especially with the planet quality improvement techs in TA :)

The random event is that all planets of level zero increase by 10. If this happens in Sol, Earth and Mars stay the same (IRC - Mars may go to ten) and all the zero's are ten.

I've never seen the random you're describing.

That technology to colonize barren worlds is like this:

There are a few types of worlds that cannot be colonized straight away, you need a few techs to do so:

Barren Worlds require "Barren world tech"

Water Worlds require "Water worlds tech"

and so on and so forth.
