Can I Automate Workers to build roads?

Hi you all :)

I was wondering. Is there some way to automate a worker to build a road from "here" to "there", just so I won't need to be moving him each turn?

It's specially annoying when I left the game for a couple of days, and takes me like 5 turns to realice "what was I doing with this fellow?"

Thanks in advance for any help!

CTRL-R = "build road to..."
CTRL+SHIFT+R="build railroad to..."

CTRL+N="build trade network of roads"

The last one IMHO is the most useful one.

How do you use the "build trade network of roads"?

Dan, I've never heard of the "ctrl+N" function. What does it do? Connect all of your cities by road/rail? Connect your cities to other civs capitals? This does sound interesting, anyone else know?

It connects all your cities together into a trade network. It's like automating your workers except it's focused entirely on connecting cities to the network, so your workers won't go off and dig mines or irrigation.

IIRC it uses the same algorithms the AI use, so it's geared for efficiency.

Don't people read the manual, or at least flick through it?

I highly recommend pages 197-198 for unit orders. It sped my game play up after quick look.

What I did when I realized that a lot of the most useful commmands are only accessible from "hot keys" (there are about 70 of the damn things in total, too much to remember) - I made myself a little text file in MS-WordPad with all commands listed, then I have that running in the background as I play Civ III.

It's then just a matter of Alt-Tab to bring this list up, and Alt-Tab again to go back to Civ III. I just find it's easier than continually trying to find page 197 or whatever in the back of the manual.

All very well and good, but why aren't all the commands available on-screen? I'm sure there's a more clever way (or should be) which would have made this kind of agricultural work-around unnecessary.

Can you post that Wordpad file? Many of us, I'm sure, would benefit from using it.

Certainly Steve.

I just made it by copy/pasting from the manual PDF file. I've never attached any files in this forum before, so I hope this works...

There is also an excellent reference guide that was done by LoneWolf 5050

click here to see the thread

It contains keyboard shortcuts, unit stats, a tech tree, terrain info, goverment info, lots of stuff...

You can download it in PDF or XLS format.

I downloaded it in PDF and printed it. That way I can look at it while I'm waiting for my next turn. Having the file is nice too, since you can edit it if you make any mod changes and then just print it again.
