Can I Disband Units into Production?

When I disband a unit, does it just go away or does it go into the production of whatever I am currently building?

(Yes I read the manual. Yes I searched)

I don't believe so. They've even change the term - it's no longer "Disband" but "delete."

I've never noticed a message about gaining production or anything. Now I simply put them in my inner cities to act as military units while the newer units head to the borders.

Any suggestions what to do with 24+ warriors and archers now that I have muskets?

Those unitsa re upgradable, if you have the tech and resources.
