Can recruited barbarians heal now?

I recall that in earlier version of the game, if you recruited barbarians they could promote (and get back 50% HP) but would not otherwise heal (e.g.. if they were damaged to 70HP, they would stay at that level no matter how many turns you rested them). In my current game I got Boudica and used her to convert 3 barbarian Swordmen that were pillaging my land. I also got Abu Al-Qasim Al-Zahrawi and I parked him in the middle of my converted Swords. They all healed back up, and turned out to be very useful, eventually becoming Muskets. I eventually lost track of which units were converted barbs and which were my own, but I think they healed on their own after I used Abu up.

My question is, do all converted barbs now heal on their own, or was this a special trick with Abu? In which case I wonder if Chaplain Apostles would also work in this way.

Never had a problem with healing converts (and I love to use that feature :) ), so that was probably patched long ago.
