Ok, after googling this error a lot, I see many similar errors but no solutions. The only solutions I see people giving are for memory problems. I even did the graphics thing for NVidia ( I have NVidia GeForce 6150 LE). My memory is 2048 MB so I SERIOUSLY doubt thats the problem. I turned the graphics down to the lowest but it still didnt fix it. My problem is that randomly after a certain ammount of time playing (unmodded) The game just goes black for a split second and then theres nothing but the desktop. No error message, no warning. If I am playing a single player game, I can load the last save and then keep playing up until the point where it originally crashed, then it does the same exact thing. Another error is I cannot ever connect to an already started online game (not even one that I crashed out of). Any solutions?

:update: Saw that right at the freeze there was always an autosave, so I disabled autosaves. Still no luck =/. Played Windowed mode too. Still no luck. Havnt bothered counting the number of turns, but I have yet to actually get anything past the middle ages or so.

:update: even got a new graphics card (not for this problem, but one nonetheless) Nvidia Geforce 7600 GS...STILL CTD!!!!

not only does it crash at 1220 ad from start, it crashes at 1220 from any start era, and cannot load industrial or classical era. It seems to freeze while loading graphics. My visual studio dot net catches it, and it seems that the dump contains an error about not being able to use a referenced memory address. visual studio.net can't catch any error when it crashes in game, but only when trying to load the industrial or classical era.

I had to update my chipset drivers, delete the hidden cache, and delete all the original Civ folders back when I resolved this, in addition to the items you mentioned. The MSXML update, Python update, .NET 2.0, Bink, Smacker, Miles Sound, and using a different binkw32.dll than the game shipped with. Oh yeah, I use the most recent version of DirectX 9.0c as there are many.
Lots of work, but I haven't had a CTD in a year, and never with Warlords *knocks on wood*.
Good luck.
