Can you recomend me some game like CIV?

Play elemental war of magic and then you will crawl back to firaxis and thank them for such an awesome release of Civ5.

Have you played Elemental yet?

I bought it a week ago and so far have 'invested' more hours into then I have in Civ V since the launch date.

The game might have been buggy at release (I didn't buy then), but it's perfectly playable now, is very deep and fun to play. It gives me that 'just one more turn' feeling that Civ V is not.

Is it perfect? Heck no, not even close, it suffers from the same AI defects as Civ V but it offers way more options/features at launch then Civ V and is more along the lines of Civ IV:BTS albeit with magic elements.

Rise of Nations may be an old game but I still find it fun. Brian Reynolds, who made the excellent Civ II and SMAC made a true classic. :D

RoN is an amazing game, it's what CiV would be if it were an RTS. The game is grounded in real tech and policies, is easy to get into and the AI is pretty challenging.

As of last night the wife has given me the ok for a new game, now, I can't decide on GC2: Ultimate or EU3: Complete. I've tried demos, I've read reviews... they both appeal to me.

Decisions, decisions...

Go for GC2 even if I don't like it much. PI is doing new expansion (Divine Wind) for EU3 now. So I would wait. Also do you know that EU3: Complete is EU3 + Napoleon's Ambition + In Nomine, but without 3rd expansion called Heir to the Throne.

Is here someone who can comment gameplay of CTP2: Ages of Man 4. I'm interesting in this game but I don't know if it is worth my time.

Meh... Civ 5 is just lame and boring, no matter how many extra DLC nations they pump into it. Elemental even if it's current beta stage gave me far more fun and took 2 times longer just to explore the game. Unlike civ 5 it's still on my HDD, waiting to be fired up again when 1.1 patch comes out.

I'm not recommending it just now, I want to see the 1.1 patch first. But it looks very, very promising.

Just purchased GalcivII w/all expansions included for 20 bucks this last weekend. It's out there and inexpensive. Much thanks to this thread in general for narrowing down my choices of Paradox games. There were sooooo many titles that held appeal, couldn't decide which one(s) looked best. Based on the suggestions here, think I'll try to get Victoria first, see how that goes, then get EUIII.

Others might disagree, but setting aside the really niche titles (Crusader Kings, etc) and focusing on the big 3 (EU, Vicky, and HOI) --

I would say that HOI is the war game. EU is the diplomacy game. Vicky is the economics and infrastructure game. All 3 certain have elements of the others - but I think that's a fair statement about the focus of each.

yes

I've invested many hours too. But before Civ5 came out. Now I appreciate Civ5 much more then many people here. ;)

It was buggy, it's still buggy (fast patching makes new bugs creep all the time), but my my main complain is with bad balance that ruins any semi-balance of interesting choices in the game.

As well as general unfinishness of the game. You know, there is total of one 6th level spell, for example (plus, many are carbon copies of each other, just with different element flavor). Or that summons rule all. Or glass heroes that are only good as casters, since they die from single hit in melee?

And diplomacy... There is pretty much nothing to do with it. Civ5 may have issues with it, but in Elemental there is pretty much no reason to use those screens exempt to activate "broken" economy/research agreements (that give flat +x% bonus). Not to mention that only important factor is player army. if strong everybody will like you and getting diplo victory would be as easy as exploring whole world to meet all factions.

Is it perfect? Heck no, not even close, it suffers from the same AI defects as Civ V but it offers way more options/features at launch then Civ V and is more along the lines of Civ IV:BTS albeit with magic elements.

AI in elemental is simply atrocious. Only challenge give roaming monsters, not enemy kingdoms. And you don't buy 4X game just to play tower defense game. :D

I never lost a single battle against enemy factions (and unit loses where minimal, if any). Combination of first strike kills anything, and with dumb battle AI, that just rushed forward, that means instant victory.

.

After finishing many games, there just wasn't enough challenge to be interested in playing more.

P.S.
Now, don't get me wrong. Elemental is bad game in state as is, but it could be improved. And Stardock seems dedicated enough to make it happen.

So not all is lost. I'll surely try it a bit more after 1.1 is out. At least to see new mana system.

Another vote for GalCiv2 here - it's pretty old now, but it's aged well :).

Imperium Galactica 2 is worth a look as well, although the 'one enormous fleet' AI can limit the replayability.

regarding GalCiv2 vs. EU III - maybe this can help.

I have an old friend since Amiga days. We have very similar taste for games but we prefer a bit different gamestyles. We both play a lot of Civ4. My civ games are usually very long, on big map, preferably real earth or europe, with disabled victories. His games are usually on small or tiny random maps, with higher difficulty (king and above, I play on prince/noble) and victory-oriented.

Now - I really loved EUIII. Lots of real concepts, immersive diplomacy, big big map of the real historic world to explore, complicated rules, colonization race, holy wars... Yummy. Very similar experience to civ IV for me, even better in terms of concepts and reality factor. Proper nation sandbox. But my friend didn't like it. It was too long and overcomplicated for him, lacked any clear goals and he didn't like being screwed by some random historic events. Wars were tied with diplomacy way too much to be funny and quick enough for him.

As for GalCiv - exactly opposite reactions. He just loves it and I don't. For me it's too boring. Sure it can be long and big as well, but basically it's simple rock-paper-scissors game hidden under overcomplicated tech and military trees.

Well if You're a determined civ fan try to get your hands on Civilization: Call To Power 2 and download Ages Of Mankind 4 mod...I spent MANY hours playing around with that.!

Looks awesome. :)

Man! The new developer diary for the 4th EU3 Expansion just came out. They are reorganizing the way the various Hordes work. It looks great in my opinion.

http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?504512-Divine-Wind-Developer-Diary-6

As a big fan of the Mongols this looks very positive. :D

More toys for dad instead of "Toys for boys: Shafer 5". ;)

An interesting read. While not a huge Horde fan ( sorry :), I like naval powers), this should add some well deserved complications into the mix.

I may just have to go and register on the PI forums, since (IMO) they're apparently upping the ante a bit on the niche games.

My thx Sir :goodjob:
