Cancel right of passage?

Does anyone know how to cancel "right of passage" with AI's? They have started to move tons of troops into my empire, and I want them out, without proposing war. Anyone?

Open negotiations with the AI in question, then go to the trade screen. Down the bottom of the trade screen, there will be two buttons, one for "New", the other for "Active". Click on the Active button to renegotiate all AI deals, including RoP. I'm not sure if that will effect your rep or not, but it shouldn't unless done in the first 20 turns after making the deal. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You are quite right that it won't affect your rep if you cancel the deal after 20 turns. This type of agreement should be cancelled before declaring war and want to maintain your good rep.

In fact you cannot cancel any deal in the first 20 turns via this screen as it will appear grey with a number in parenthesis. You will not be able to select the deal to cancel it under such circumstances. You can cancel the deal by declaring war but then your rep will be trashed so if you want an agreement to end before the initial 20 turns are up and you value your reputation, you need to convince them to declare war on you!;)

Uhm, yes, what would make them delcare war on me? Also, how can I get one AI to become annoyed/furious with another?

Actually I'm still confused. How do I open negotiations? I have an embassy in India, and it has been over 20 turns, but on the embassy screen OR the "foreign advisor" screen I see no option to cancel anything?

I'm afraid that I can't find any way of phrasing it better than this!

No, No, I figured that out before you posted that, thanks though. But my other question still stands, what would make them delcare war on me? Also, how can I get one AI to become annoyed/furious with another? Lastly, how can I demand money from them to be nice and not declare war on them, and will this lower my rep?

Check out the discussion is the Quick Answers/'Newbie' Questions thread for your first question. This post is a good starting point within it.

Setting up alliances and then getting them to redeclare (via another alliance) as soon as they finally agree peace terms normally works well for encouraging antipathy between AIs.

Lastly, how can I demand money from them to be nice and not declare war on them, and will this lower my rep?
We keep crossposting!

You can demand cash by not offering anything in return when making a deal. Just select what you want from them and then click on the 'accept this deal or suffer' type message.

If you are feeling brave, you can renegotiate peace by going to existing deals and then clicking on the Peace Treaty. Only do this if you mean business as failure to come to an agreement will result in you declaring war. If you are relatively strong, this can be pretty effective.

Neither will ruin your rep (unless you declare war with units in their territory) as you are not being dishonest. However it will affect the AIs attitude to you. After all, nobody likes a bully! ;)

In the lower levels, this is a good way to score some gold and techs, without damaging your infrastructure and development through war. In the higher levels, the AIs are more difficult to push around, but it can still be done.

You can also demand cities, although you want to be damn sure of your military if you try this, as even at Chieftain the AI won't give you a city unless you're an uberpower. This is a good way to score island cities, which can't be invaded until the marine (or beserker, if you're the Vikings). I constantly score myself some Carthaginian cities in the Test of Time mod by invading Spain and demanding Sardinia and Carthage's cities in the Iberian Peninsular, with 30-40 Swordsmen looking over their shoulder.

I believe that if you pillage the luxes and resources that are being traded between AI civs, you weaken their reputations amongst each other by forcing them to break existing deals.

Thats also good if your enemy is getting his iron or horses from another AI in a trade. If you pillage whatever luxury the AI is trading for the iron or horses, you not only weaken their economy with happiness issues, you also deprive them of the military resource and weaken them militarily.

I had a MA with the celts against japan, war weariness becomes a problem so since the 20 turns are up i cancel the alliance and make peace. but then my rep was trashed, i tried to buy tech for gpt and they would say 'not after what you did to celts'

do i ned to wait for them to break the alliance?
or is it because i draged them into the war that got them killed?

From memory, you need to either fight to the death, or allow them to break the alliance. Not sure since I don't make alliances often, which is probably a mistake.

If you cancel the alliance and then make peace there is no problem. I have done this many times before without losing my rep. There is also no direct problem in having an ally getting KO'd. It must be something else. The usual one is having a deal where you've offered resources and then the trade route is broken.

Now as you say that the Celts were killed, then my assumption is that you still had a deal with them in supplying a resource. Perversely, you are blamed for breaking that trade route when their last city is taken (assuming the trade route wasn't already broken at some point beforehand). That's my guess from the limited info that we have to go on but I can assure you that there is no problem with breaking an alliance after 20 turns as long as you cancel the alliance before accepting peace terms. Never supply a civ that is in danger of elimination with any resource as you will take the rep hit when they are killed off.

As far as deals are concerned, if dealing with a civ that is likely to attack, make sure that if you trade with them, offer them gpt instead of flat amounts. This will make them less likely to attack because they do not want to lose their precious gpt (even if it's 1 gpt).

Also, if you are the superpower but don't feel like warmongering, then you can discuss the peace treaty again by clicking on it in the active deals and request gold, gpt, techs, etc from the AI. This is a good way to earn some extra cash.

Finally, I find that declaring war while you have a RoP with the AI will not hurt your reputation too much if, after the war, you gift the AI about 20 gold. This will increase your reputation and should counter-act the effects of your declaration of war while you had an RoP.
