Disclaimer: I am a novice concerning computer technology so I hope I make sense.

My problem: After changing “SkipIntroVideo = 1” & “full-screen mode to 0”, I was finally able to advance into the game. Once I chose how I wanted to play, “single player and then tutorial”, the game display screen will show a leader, plus a menu screen describing that particular civ & leader - along with their special units. At the same time a narrator is repeating the information already displayed on the menu screen. Once he is finished talking, the background changes, from the leader, to a view of the map but the menu screen is still visible. At this point, the music is still playing but I cannot proceed forward. I do not see any buttons/links that I can click to go forward nor does the menu screen disappear.
Note: During the leader intro, (before it changes to the map) – half of the leaders head is cropped about 1” at the top, along with the top portion of the menu screen. The same seems to be true for the bottom portion of the display screen.
I’ve played with the computer’s screen resolution with no positive effect. The max screen resolution I have on this laptop is 1600 x 900. Any help would be appreciated.

Okay, I finally found a partial fix. The buttons/links, which allow you to exit or enter, are active but are being cropped by the game frame. Pressing “return/enter” allows me to activate the buttons and advance into the game. The same holds true for the various venues throughout the game, (Advisor screen, tech tree, etc.), whenever I want to exit and return to game play.)

I guess my problem now becomes, how can I change the resolution on the game, or on my computer, so I can view and access the hidden areas? Again, I have played with the resolution on my computer with no positive effect. Any help would be appreciated.

The options menu only provides me with one setting: 1067 x 600. Is installing a graphics card an option?

You can't really upgrade the graphics card in a laptop :(.

You've already edited the .ini file, right?
There you should be able to set the resolution manually.
Try 1024 * 768 instead. The resolution you mention is completely unusual.

Okay, I open the GraphicsSettingsDX9.ini, locate & edit:

WindowResX = 1067
WindowResY = 600

and change them to:

WindowResX = 1024
WindowResY = 768

Click on File, Save & Exit notebook.

When I restart the game I still have the same resolution difficulties but what’s more frustrating is when I reopen the DX9.ini and inspect the lines I had just edited - they have been changed back to their original settings of 1067 * 600. What am I missing here? Help me obi-wan-J:)

You could try this.

  1. Open up the .ini file, and edit it as you did before.
  2. Save it, close and reopen it to make sure the changes "stuck".
  3. Right-click on it, and choose "properties". On the attributes at the bottom, click the "Read Only" box, and then hit "Apply"
This should prevent Civ5 from over-writing it, but would also likely prevent you changing any settings in-game....

It worked! :) To the extent that I can now see 1/2 of the buttons located on the bottom of the screen.

I want to thank all of you for working with me on this and appreciate not only the time you invested on my particular problem, but the construction of Civ V.

Thank you again.

The main problem is that the game UI will not get any smaller than 768. 720 is still workable, but anything below that will start chopping controls and UI off the top and bottom.
