Hello,

I am hoping that civfanatics can help me with this issue. Basically, I have been really struggling to install mods for my game. I will provide some technical details that may help:

Civ IV: Beyond The Sword
Windows 7
Steam Version
Beta Mode: NONE
Steam is installed in: program files x86 folder

What I Tried to Do:

1.) Visited https://sourceforge.net/projects/civ4bug/ and downloaded BUGMod_4.4.exe

2.) Ran the downloaded file on my computer and used the first install option for Single player.

3.) The following appeared:

bugmodfail.jpg

4.) I looked in my game folder and saw:

bugmoddir1.jpg

5.) Opening it, I saw:

bugmoddir2.jpg

6.) When I open my game and go to check version, I see:

civ4btsversion.jpg

7.) No mod is installed! When I go to LOAD A MOD in the game, I see:

8.) BUG does not even appear. All of the mods there are just default ones that shipped with the game, except for BUFFY, which I tried and failed to install in order to play the game of the month. The failure to do this has caused me a great deal of irritation. If anyone reading this can help, I would really appreciate it. I read somewhere that completely uninstalling steam and putting it in the regular program files folder (not x86) might help. This is a big nuisance and I would rather not. This is what happens when I try to load BUFFY mod:

9.) Thinking that maybe it installed, I open up a game and see what it looks like.:

I don't see any noticeable difference, except that Thebes "name-bar-thing" for Thebes is slightly bigger and isn't affected by map zoom. Sine this mod is so ubiquitous, I figured that it can't be installed right. Is there a good before/after comparison that will show me what it is supposed to look like?

If anyone can help me in fixing this, I would be eternally grateful. I can give more details as to what I did if that would help. Thank you so much.

Update: I managed to solve the problem with the help of reading a whole slew of old threads in this forum. BUG is installed! This subforum is a very good resource. However, I am still unable to get the BUFFY mod to work. I see the following error, and am hoping that someone can help me with it:

Run the game as Administrator before loading BUFFY. BUFFY needs to save in protected folders and can't do that unless you run as Administrator.

Update (after significant help THANK YOU): This is the current situation.

I ran the asset checker on HOF page and it gave results:

I do not know where to find these files, but someone in a thread years ago fixed the problem by getting working files from someone who had installed HOF mod correctly. If someone here is able to locate a link to download these files I believe it will work. Thank you everyone reading and trying to assist me.

It's telling you that you are missing the HOF files for Vanilla Civ and Warlords. You don't have those mods installed, and you're running BUFFY anyway, so you're using BTS. Those files don't matter in this case. You have another problem.

I would ask this question in the HOF forum. There is a way to get BUFFY working with Steam. I just don't know what it is.

Thank you. This is why I hate technology.

If I were to install my non-steam version, would it be easier to fix? The problem with that is that I've lost my warlords disc.

Nothing worthwhile is ever easy, I suppose.

Unless you want to run Warlords, it doesn't matter that you don't have the disc. I never bought Warlords, just the original and BTS. I run BTS all the time with no problem. I only run the disc versions, so I can't help you with the Steam problem. However, I seem to recall that the "beta" version on Steam is really the unmodified version that is needed for multi player and several other things including I think Buffy.

Can I install the game from disc if I also have it installed from steam? Twice on the same machine?

I also only have 1 civ4 disc - disk1. Am I correct in remembering that I require 3 discs to install and just one to play? I would need to buy a physical copy, then?

It is a testament to how good this game is that I am willing to purchase it three times.
