Hi there,

I have joined this forum specifically to let you know my solution to the problem of the European / UK version of Civ 4 on DVD Rom.

I received Civ 4 as a present at Xmas and when I put the DVD in my DVD drive it installed fine but once I tried to play it I got as far as the loading screen and it did nothing. After about a minute it crashed and an erro message came up saying "unable to locate CD-rom - please insert correct CD in the drive" (or something along those lines). Sound familiar?

Anyway, I tried all the usual tricks that my PC would allow - downloading patches, safedisk4, rebooting the PC, changing my transfer mode settings on IDE/ATAPI etc and to no avail. I then came to the conclusion that it isn't the problem with my game, it is the problem of the DVD drive itself. You see I also had Black & White 2 and had the same problem.

My PC is approx. 3 years old and meets all the recommended specs with one exception - the dvd drive has never been updated with the latest firmware. I have a Mitsumi DVD drive and there was no way of contacting them to upgrade the firmware so I simply went out and bought an External DVD Rewriter Drive for my PC which cost about £50 from PC world.

I set it up when I got home - reinstalled Civ 4, ran the game, and lo and behold it works!!!

So to conclude, it is a mixture of good and bad news really. Good news because it is the solution to end all problems with starting Civ 4 but bad news because it means forking out more money on a decent new DVD drive.
