I have read here on the forum to go to the conquests folder and look for the conquests.ini file. I have civ 3 complete so I don't know if it will work for me but when I go to the files I don't see the ini file anywhere. I see conquests.biq and a conquests.mb file and all the other stuff but no ini file. I am very inexperienced when it comes to computers so I could be missing something, but any help I could get would be greatly appreciated. I've had this game for a week and haven't been able to play it. The only time I got close was when a little box popped up when it froze and said the game works better with a higher resolution, would you like to change it? I put it to 1024x768 and it started to work fine. Then it shut off on me before I got to play the game but thats the farthest I've gotten with it. Please Help!!!

I believe the conquests.ini file is not present right after installing, it is auto-generated after the first time you run the game. By "run the game" I mean get into the menu from which you can choose to start a new game, play a scenario, exit, etc. If you can't get into the main menu or at least start a game and exit, then the file won't be present in the folder.

I think you can get around that by having someone send you the conquests.ini file or post the contents so you can make one with notepad, but it would have to be a clean file right after installation and it would have to match your conquests version number. (you can't have anyones file because they have previous game information in them, preferences, last save opened, and a whole bunch of other computer specific info, it has to be a conquests.ini file thats clean after instalation.)

Oh ok great thanks! Now that you said that is there something I need to do on my end with my computer to keep it from freezing after I push the play button?

To be honest, I don't know why you are getting errors, but your safest bet is to uninstall the game and reinstall it. Whats the size of your screen (inches), and what resolution is Windows running at, and what version of Windows do you have? It could be either an installation error, or you are using a resolution lower than Civ3 is capable of supporting.

I believe my screen is 14.1 inches, my resolution that Windows is running at is 1024x768, and I have Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 2. Thanks again for trying to help me!

If its a 14.1 inch laptop widescreen display then it should be 1280x800, if its not widescreen then you already have it set to 1024x768. What I would do is uninstall/reinstall the game, run it once, and enter KeepRes=1 into the conquests.ini file and try playing it then. If that doesn't help then I don't think its a problem with the screen resolution, it would be a bug in the game itself. Do you get any error messages or popups when it crashes, what exactly happens when you try to start a new game?

Just another question, what kind of monitor is it? Is it a laptop display or seperate monitor (LCD or tube) and is it normal or widescreen? And what brand video card do you have?

btw, I was asking about the OS to see if this would be another Vista bug, and since you have XP that rules out many possible sources of errors.
