Cannot spread Mining Inc - reason?

I've searched the forum and read the corporation threads and I have a dilemma with Mining Inc. that I'm hoping my fellow board members will be able to assist me with.

On the weekend I wanted a "sandbox" kind of game so I went down to Prince and played as Bismark of the Germans, the goal being to generate as many Great Engineers as I could possibly generate - it's been going swimmingly. I have 7 settled Great Engineers, two free engineer specialists (Industrial Park + Build 9 Forges quest) and running 10 engineer specialists. I built the Three Gorges Dam in 10 turns!

So of course I saved an engineer for Mining Inc and i've spread it to my production cities. I hit up a weak neighbour with a bunch of branches and near the end of that effort I got a quest to spread Mining Inc. to 10 more cities.

I'm playing Hemispheres and I thought - hey lets make this company intercontinental baby!

I send 10 of them across the ocean to three different Civs, none of whom are running State Property. But when I try to set up a corporate branch the option to do so is greyed out. I know the cities need access to one of Mining Inc's resources, but really, they're quite ubiquitous and I can't see any civ not having bronze AND iron for starters... Just to be sure i sent one to a city that had bronze in a tile right next to it... but still nothing...

As I type this I'm thinking of another reason - could it be because they haven't researched the Corporation yet? What other reasons could there be - is there something about me not having a city on the other continent? Do I need to set up a city in order to get my corp's resources established on the other continent?

Also - anyone had that quest before for Mining Inc? What happens if I successfully spread to 10 cities? What do I get!?

Are they in Mercantilism? That also blocks out foreign Corporations. It could also be you don''t have the funds to open a new branch; they do cost gold you know.

I believe the Mining Corp quest gives you 10 extra gold at your corporate HQ.

Oh well maybe it isn't worth it then - I was hoping I'd get extra production from branches, or maybe another Great engineer - but giving production to my enemies probably isn't worth 10 extra gold... been doing ok budget wise at around +200 or so gpt a turn...

If corp headquarters is in your Wall Street city then every city that has that corp in it gets you +12 gold. +4 gold base *100% for standart buildings (market, grosser, bank) +100% for WS. This benefit is reduced when corp is in one of your cities, because the corp costs maintenance. But unless you have a rediculous number of resources usable by that corp, the benefits are usually greater then the maintenance.

If the corp is in foreign city, then AI pays the maintenance and you get full benefit, however they also get the benefit of the bonuses granted by that corp, but only based on the resources available to them. So if you spread Mining inc. to the AI that has only one source of iron, it will grant only one extra hammer to that city, cost a bunch of gold for the AI and gain you +12 gold per turn. You could theoretically bankrupt the AI that way. The only way out would be to switch to state property.

Ya I totally missed doing that - think I ended up deciding on my Wall street city a little after I had built my HD in the capital - kicking myself because its a pretty damned sick Wall Street city as it is and having +70 or so gold x the extra 100% would have made it even sicker...

When I get home tonight I'll def take a look and see if those civs that can't take my branches don't have Corporation yet - and double check whether they're in Mercantilism or not...

AI loves merc and SP. Only civs with a favorite economic civic will run things other than those two.

has the UN been built? if it has and your Secratary-General, then try to get enviormentalism
civic passed. then you can spread to AI cities.
