I can't find that this has been mentioned.

With the latest patch, construction of destroyers now depends on combustion rather than electricity. However, after electricity and before combustion you can no longer build frigates. You are stuck with either ironclads or caravels. Or any frigates you may have constructed beforehand.

And I have plenty of iron.

Yeah, not confirmed this, but I'd consider it a bug - the obsolete field of frigate should be changed to match the prereq tech of destroyers.

I just noticed this as well. Frigates are still obsolete with Electricity even though Destroyers aren't available until Combustion. Caravels aren't obsolete until Combustion now so this is something that was overlooked in the last patch. It's easy enough to confirm, just open up the CIV5Units XML and find the Firgate entry. Obsolete tech is stil Electricity.

It would be nice if it works like in Civ 4, where units don't become obsolete by a simple tech, but by the availability of building more modern units.

In this example, frigates wouldn't become obsolete just with Electricity (or Combustion); they cannot be built any more IF you can build destroyers.
If destroyers require oil and you don't have oil, you cannot build destroyers, so you would be able again to build frigates, and if you don't have iron as well, you would be able to build caravels.

In Civ 4, the unit that made the old unit obsolete was also the unit that the old unit upgraded to. This doesn't work in Civ 5 because in the Modern Era, you have limited resources for building the modern units and need to be able to build the older units as backup. Thats why they go obsolete with techs instead of with units.

In the modern age , if you don't have resources to build a modern unit, what does happen?
Aren't you able to build an older version of it?

Yes. That's why units become obsolete with techs instead of with other units. So you can upgrade a tank to a modern armor but can still build a tank anytime you want.

I can confirm that this is still bugged as of yesterday morning (8/14/11). Frigates still go obsolete with electricity. I was really very hopeful it would have been fixed in the patch that went out this month (that changed seaports and other things), but alas. Its just one line in the xml. Has anyone created a mod fix for this yet? I'll do it myself soon. Its simply silly that this persists. Surely Firaxis knows about it? Is there some kind of explanation for it?

I think this should be posted in the confirmed bugs forum.

Just change the obsolete tech in the xml. Change this <ObsoleteTech>TECH_ELECTRICITY</ObsoleteTech> to this <ObsoleteTech>TECH_COMBUSTION</ObsoleteTech> in Civ5Units.xml. See if that works. I doubt they went in to change coding for just that one unit.
