Tried to change an XML file and it didn't work. So unistalled from Control panel Civ IV and BTS.

Trying to reinstall, but the disk won't give me the option to Install, just play. It seems to think the game is still installed somewhere no the PC.

Tried to go into the disk and launch from Setup icon, but when the process asks for 2nd disk it locks up and goes to a white screen and I have to Restart my PC to do anything.

Any input?

the below lists everything that needs to go (ignore warlords if you do not have that):

install the most recent version of DirectX 9c from Microsoft

then do the following for a clean reinstall:

Uninstall and Reinstall Civ4 Warlords BtS :

Try to follow this order when doing stuff:
Use Control panel to uninstall Beyond the Sword, then Warlords, then Civ4
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\sid meier's civilization 4" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\warlords" manually
Delete "...\documents and settings\<username>\local settings\application data\my games\beyond the sword" manually
(note: application data is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files, also these directories in application data are sometimes removed by the uninstall routine)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{CFBCE791-2D53-4FCE-B3FB-D6E01F4112E8}" (Civ4)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{3E4B349F-10B5-4586-9D99-489A90A8B228}" (Warlords)
Delete "...\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\{32E4F0D2-C135-475E-A841-1D59A0D22989}" (BtS)
(note: InstallShield Installation Information is a hidden directory so you need to configure windows explorer to show hidden files).
Install Civ4, immediately patch it to 1.61 (download it fresh from here)
Install Warlords, immediately patch it to 2.08 (download it fresh from here)
Install Beyond the Sword, immediately patch to 3.19 (download it fresh from here).

Hi Ori,

I deleted all those files and folders and still not getting the option to install when I drop the DVD in.

Hoping you have some more ideas!!

I also tried installing by opening the DVD in the D drive up, and clicking Setup from there. But I get to the point where it asks for disk 2 and then everything freezes up. I know disk 2 works because after I wiped my hard drive the last time this happened it installed ok.

There just has to be something somewhere left on the C drive that is showing it as already being installed.

I didn't restart the first time, but went back through and deleted the files that it tried to reload up when I tried it from Setup on Disc 1 itself.

So removed them all again, and restarted. Still not getting the Install option.

Is there anything that I really need on disc 2? Maybe a custom install from the Setup icon on disc 1 and if I can skip disc 2 it might work, just need to know what I can skip on disc 2 if anything.

This is Windows XP Home Edition.

bumping to see if anyone has any more thoughts on what I can do.

anyone think buying a new CivIV and seeing if the PC would recogize it as a different version and think it can install it?

If I try to install from the Setup icon on the actual disc, I can get to where it asks for disc 2, but once I put that in the cd/dvd drive it freezes and then I get a window showing me what is on the disc 2..the zipped file. Anyone do a custom install and not use disc 2?

Any thoughts on if a Steam version would override it thinking the game is already installed?

Any other locations files could be located rather than what Ori wrote above? Registry perhaps?

Appreciate any help on this! Hate the thought of not playing the game anymore as much as I hate the thought of wiping my hard drive to be able to play it again!!

Got Civ IV vanilla to load up! Copied the disc 2 info to the PC and loaded it from there. Worked well.

Now Can't get BTS to load up. Tried the same thing because I was getting a disc 2 error with that one too. Now when I try to browse to a different location than D drive it automatically reverts back to D drive when I click 'OK'.

Gonna keep playing around with it to see what works.

I was able to install Warlords on top of Civ IV vanilla, but can't get BTS to install. It goes through to where it asks for disc 2, then when I insert disc 2 it locks up. Tried copying over the file from disc 2 to a different location on my C drive, but when I try to browse to that location or even type over the D: .....it reverts to D: when I press the enter key.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

Happy to at least get Civ Warlords in though...gonna miss the BTS!

Scoottr, look in your regedt32 for places that refer to the previous install on your D: drive.

Be careful messing around in there though as you can frack your computer.

Got it to work!

I did the copy both discs over to a file on my hard drive and launched the install from that folder. It never even asked for disc 2 and seems like it installed good. I am patching right now.

Thank you very very much to eveyone who contributed! I was hating the thought of being stuck at Warlords!

Thanks again!!

When modding don't alter your original files. Copy the file you want to alter to your custom assets folder, and modify that copy (the game will load custom assets when it starts up), that way this wol't happen again (you can just delete the file(s) in your custom assets if you screw something up). There is absolutely no reason to mess with your original BtS files.
