Can't Install Alpha Centauri (Sold Out Software Package)

Just ordered SMAC (with SMAX) from Amazon. The Sold Out Software distribution. I let the autorun installer run, click install, and then nothing happens. I've also tried directly running the setup.exe file from the CD (with administrator privileges) and nothing happens as well.

Any tips?

I'm going to assume you're running Windows 7. The following instructions need to be modified for other OSs. Right-click on setup.exe, select Properties and then select the Compatibility tab. Try various options. If none of them work, please post again.

I figured it out. The installer will not run if Google chrome is also running. I am not sure why chrome would have that effect but I've also experienced this issue with other old games so I wasn't surprised that was the culprit.

Not trying to be a thread necro, but this is one of the top Google results when searching how to install alpha centauri on windows 7... and its not the most helpful, I quit chrome and it didnt make a difference. I wrote up a blog post that's helped a few so I just wanted to post the link here for the weary google traveler looking for info on playing this great game (especially the sold out software version)
