Please help! Downloaded contender class GOTM 3, but my Civ 4 game doesn't recognize it as a save file.

Has your browser decided to add a .txt on the end? If so rename it to just have Civ4SavedGame as its extension.

Although I love PC games, I am a PC Idiot...I know some basics but...

So I downloaded the GOTM 3 file onto disk (did it at work!) and took it home to play on my PC (currently home internet is down...)

Where do I put the file and how do I play it? I tried putting it in the saved games file, no luck...tried renaming the file (used .Civ4SavedGame extension)to get it to work in there...no luck.

Tried double clicking it, selecting Civ4 as program to open with...Civ 4 opens and the file does not show up under saved games...

When I explore the saved games folder with 'My Computer' I see my other saved games in there as well as the GOTM file, but the icons look different. Like I said, this file extension has been renamed and civ4 chosen as application to open this file, but it still wont work right.

Any help would be great!!!!

When viewing 'My Computer', look at the top menu bar, and click 'Tools', then 'Folder Options'. That will pop-up a window. Click the 'View' tab. Look for an entry named 'Hide extensions for known file types'. Make sure that you do NOT have that checked. If it is, uncheck it, click 'Apply', then 'OK'. Then go look at the files again.

If it is checked, a file that is truly named 'something.civ4sav.txt' will be shown with a icon for Text files, and the name will just be displayed as 'something.civ4sav'. An unknown file (like a civ4sav file) will be shown with a different icon, but still have it's name displayed as 'something.civ4sav'.

With that setting unchecked, you'll be able to see the true name of the file, which makes it much easier to ensure that it has the correct extension.

Thanks, I will do that and it will help, but I am pretty sure I typed the extension correctly, I double checked it a few times, so I don't believe that is the root of the problem.

P.S. My home internet service will be on by friday, so it will be a lot easier to do this troubleshooting from home instead of work! I will take the risk of downloading the save game files at work (then floppy disk them home), but installing civ4 on my work PC is a bit much!

You can't tell what you are doing if the final extension on the file name is hidden by Windows.

I rechecked by right click file, rename, and typed the .Civ4SaveGame after the file name. I tried that a couple times and you are right, I could never see a visible change...hope this fixes it!

And by the way, I am taking the file from disk, putting in on my desktop and dragging it into the program files>firaxis games>Civ4>saves>single folder. Is that the correct path for the GOTM file? I may be doing that wrong as well. Once I start the game I am starting a single player game and trying to load a game. Seemed like the logical way to do it...

I'm not a Windows user, but I don't think it should matter where the file is as long as you can see its location from the Open a File dialog in Civ4.

Yes - that's the right place.

The problem is that it windows has the setting for "hide file extensions for known files" turned on, then it can mislead you.

It may be named "gotm03contender.Civ4SavedGame.txt" - and be hiding the .txt on the end, making you think its "gotm03contender.Civ4SavedGame" - you won't know this even if you remane it - you may just be renaming the first part.

Are you wanting the Contender version? I've put a zipped copy on this post - it will prevent the .txt extension being added. Just unzip it into the saves directory.

If you want it for another class, let me know. :)

What browser do you use? We don't usually see this sort of problem on the usual suspects like Internet Exploiter Exploder Explorer, Firefox, Safari, ....

Could it be, maybe, that you're using a browser plugin like Adblock and that your have a filter that is filtering out the icon?
The icon doesn't download with the file, it's displayed by Windows when Windows recognises the file type. It works that out purely from the last characters of the file name, from the last period to the end - the file extension.

Civ4 registers its interest in .Civ4SavedGame files when you install it. The problem arises if a browser tries to be too clever by half and adds an extra extension, usually '.txt', onto the end of the file's name when it downloads it. Then Windows doesn't know it's really a .Civ4SavedGame file and hides it from Civ4.

You can overcome this either by renaming the file to remove teh offending '.txt' or, in most software but prolly not Civ4, by telling the File Select dialog to Show All Files instead of just the ones it thinks it should.

HaHa...Yes, I think it is IE 5.5, but I am currently downloading the file from my computer at work and taking the files home on disk, where my home computer has all sorts of adaware programs and blockers all over it, regardless of the fact that it has not been connected to the internet in a few months! (Lovely hawaii weather manages to corrode the cable boxes and it takes 3 weeks to get a tech out!!!) I am pretty sure after all the help posts that I have gotten that I will have the problem solved when I get home today!
