Hi Guys,

sorry if this has been covered before, but i am anxious to start playing Civ 4.

I've just installed Civ, but when i start up civ4 it says

"Emulation/ DVD software detected. Please disable these and restart"

I can assure you i have no such software, and even if i did, i'd have no idea on how to switch it off.

. Is there a patch/ fix that gets round this?

the game has detected something that could be piracy. if you have any virtual cd programs, reopne and close them again. sometimes the fake cs's may still be in the meny even if it's closed. if not, download a program called: Pr0t stop and try that, it's just a small fix . dunno if it's legal but it should be np ;)

hmmm, nope that hasnt helped either.

It seems that once again, over-zealous programmers have completely destroyed the element of fun for normal, honest gamers.

I have been playing Civ since 1991 and i'm thoroughly disappointed by this ludicrous and major bug.

It looks like i have made a mistake trusting firaxis to do a good job.

Perhaps you should contact support, they might be able to help, while i am pretty sure, just moaning will not lead nowhere. You are the first one i hear having this trouble with Civ btw, so is not that common.

I must admit that you are absolutely correct- moaning won't help.

However, i cannot find any obvious signs of Cloning Software active on the computer.

Even if i did have it, what steps would i take to turn it off? All help is very much appreciated.

Tronicoz- ty for your advice, i have tried a few things now pr)t stops, AB, Jackal etc, but none seem to get rid of the problem.

From some older games i remember Nero (and possible other CD/DVD writer software) causing this kind of stuff (They will install Virtual device drivers sometimes. You should be able to disable it).... Other than this i can't think of anything helpful. (And of course stuff like Alcohol, Demon Tools - but i guess you would have disabled it already...)

If its legit, contact customer support about it. I don't think its appropriate to ask about getting around anti-pirate protection here, regardless of whether its a legit copy.

 SUCCESS!!! SUCCESS!!! SUCCESS!!!!!

Refar- i found 2 old undeleted Nero Files. 92kb in combined size. Dunno what they were. The remnants of a file hidden in a file hidden in a file, that i didn't find and uninstall 18 months ago when i bought the PC from a friend!!!
I didnt think it would do much but decided to give it a try, but i could have cried when the intro cinema-play started rolling. I wouldn't have even thought Nero would have had an impact. But here we are :)

I can now start to play the game and i am ludicrously happy.

I also think i owe a few apologies to firaxis for not holding my temper (and tongue). However when you have been loyally playing Civ for 17 years, and decide it's time to move on from Civ 3, only to be denied by a bureaucratic error message, the blood starts to boil.

Many thanks to everyone for your suggestions and help :goodjob: Very much appreciated, and i look forward to making a contribution to the Civ 4 world

Kinda funny to me, I *have* daemon tools AND nero burning rom on my system (and daemon tools is set to start with system start). Yet I've always launched the game via cd and it's never complained.

I too have Nero and Daemon, and the game on an external HD (something I hear is sometimes detected by some programs as an illegal device), and have no problem whatsoever.

I had the same kind of trouble with vanilla, but I'm able to run BTS from a virtual CD drive. And yes, my copy is legitimate, I just dislike having to find CD's every time I want to play a game.
