Can't Reinstall

Right... I got BtS reinstalled and all patched up, but now I'm getting a python error when loading ("Failed Initializing Python") and the game exits.

The weird thing about it is that I never had that python fail before. Anyway, I haven't tried reinstalling yet this week, but I will and post a new logs.zip. (BTW, I can't reinstall Civ 4 and Warlords disc is being read erringly by my PC, so I'm afraid if I uninstall it I can't reinstall...)

the warlords suggestion was so that you could run the setup.exe from the hard drive. Don't do that with BtS already installed.
What is the problem now? I see a python exception but does the game start at all?
Also could you remind me: is this win xp/vista/7?

I'm still using Vista and both BtS and Warlords do not run: the Warlords disc won't be read and BtS CTDs after the python init fail message.

I am sure you already installed with admin rights and all that. So is there an error message when it crashes?
easiest way to check is:
open the windows event manager: http://www.petri.co.il/vista-event-viewer.htm
note the newest event log in the applications part then start and crash the game and see if there are any new logs in the event manager (might need to restart that).

Thanks, I'll check next time I try to reinstall. BTW, why did you ask me to copy the Warlords disc onto my hard drive if I'm not allowed to use the copy unless BtS is uninstalled?

I thought you were reinstalling BtS anyways and thought that in the process it might work to install Warlords - if that was not the case it was a misunderstanding

What I would do in your case though (if possible) is to completely remove all instances of the game (Vanilla/Warlords/BtS) - including all files that the uninstaller leaves behind. Then using some registry scrubber - like ccleaner to remove the registry entries - then try to install with admin rights - making sure that at each step the game does in fact start. So many reinstalls should not be necessary...

Wow... tried this:

and it seems to be working (currently waiting for the 3.19 update, but BtS starts OK). So:

:newyear:

Hm. Although reinstallment appears functional, there are some oddities I've noticed, with "TXT_KEY..." texts appearing where there should be text. For instance with the original selection screen there is no SELECT CUSTOM SCENARIO. Also, when I tried the Charlemagne scenario the Civics screen is missing a REVOLUTION button and I could only exit it via ESC.

Anynody have an idea on what might be causing this - or better: if it can be fixed somehow?

usually its because either one of the xml files was not written into the install files properly - which should not happen at all
or because the game does not have administrator rights to access these files
or the game is run on a non-latin laguage operating system.

Hm. OK, that makes little sense... all I can say is I installed As Administrator, as suggested. Anyway, thanks for replying.

could you do the following:
open \my games\beyond the sword\civilizationIV.ini and set all items with log in their name from 0 to 1. Then start a game recreate the error and close the game. Then post all items in the \my games\beyond the sword\logs subfolder as a zip file?
I guess that some xml file got corrupted during the installation. I assume that your operating system is not an asian or russian language one.
