Lake Syndicate, Terracotta Army, and Gunner Economic Interests Clash in Central Asia
Over the last ten years, the Lake Syndicate and Terracotta Army have expanded their economic reach and clout into Central Asia. This past December, these competing interests came to a head as President Zapran Jamshidi of the Coalition of Central Asian Republic (C-CAR) announced that bidding for a lucrative mining contract for which firms representing the interests of both factions compete.
A third faction, the Court of the Gunners, also found itself embroiled in this battle. A court member has (without authorization) used Gunner resources and connections to finance a major mining company. The member has been punished, but has left the Court on the hook for loss should their erstwhile corporate ally fail to win the bid.
Much rides on this contract for these firms, and the unexpected auction process has left many firms on the hook for debt and equipment. Failure to win the contract would mean a loss.
Resolving this Conflict: To come out on top, a faction has to complete one of the following before July 2220.
1. Roll Security 9+ to strategically position security assets in the region (1d6 months)
2. Spend 1 Fiscal Defense (no roll, takes 1d6 months)
3. Roll Maintenance 8+ to minimize the financial impact of losing the bid (1d6 months)
Not all options are created equal.
Sector Economic Downturn Plagues Factions
Several factions have been impacted by an economic downturn and revealed fundamental weakness in the finances and economies of major powers. Should factions fail to adjust, they risk financial turmoil for the rest of the decade.
Resolving this Issue: The following factions are affected by this event:
1. Lake Syndicate (must complete by January 2223)
2. The World Corps (must complete by January 2223)
3. Martian Cooperative Industries (must complete by January 2221)
4. National Socialist Front of Chanada (must complete by January 2224)
5. Eastern Mars Shipping Company (must complete by January 2221)
Over the course of this event, a faction must accumulate 10 Effect on Economic (modified by Greed) checks and 10 Effect on Maintenance (modified by Tenacity) checks. Each check takes 1d6 months.
An Anti-Psionic Hacker Collective Targets Endless Order
The Endless Order has come under digital fire as a collective of hackers across settled space coordinate the sector's largest coordinated hack in history. The digital war began in November of last year and has escalated with the spread of the LIChaos.fuk dynamovirus. The virus has unique properties never before seen in the digital ecosystem, such as flawlessly surpassing the latest detection software on trade ships that link the outer worlds to Sol.
The Endless Order will need to either go on the offensive or solidify its defenses to starve off these attacks.
Resolving this Issue: Roll Sabotage 9+ in order to undo the damage wrought on EO systems OR roll Illicit 8 to seed data with damaging code and, if lucky, trace the attacks.
Mercenary Army Lands on Banneker b
As civilization spreads across the stars, so does the perceived need for conflict. Private mercenary companies, spearheaded by the Cobalt Mercenaries of the prior century, spearheaded a new line of military thinking that placed an emphasis on deniable non-state force assets. The rise of space mercenaries, initially fodder for sci-fi blockbusters, has become a political landmine for Terran and Martian politicians who must regularly fend off requests for assistance from outer world communities complaining of abuses and the formation of minor petty kingdoms.
One of these mercenary companies, the Bauxite Corporate, was expelled from their base of operation and have now arrived to Banneker b. This world, hostile and without the protection of a strong professional army or fleet, has become a target for the exiled CEO who styles herself a queen.
Resolving this Issue: The Endless Order has until January 2223 to resolve this event. To do so, complete the following.
1. Accumulate 20 total Effect on Hostility and/or Security checks, modified by Militarism DM. Each check takes 1d6 months.
Remember, now all checks are created equal.
Korea Declares War on China
The Unified Republic of Korea has declared war on China, a country ruled by the enigmatic Terracotta Army. The URK has, since the collapse of Japan and China, consolidated power in bordering regions and forged economic and military alliances across the region. The Chinese and Tokyo ambassadors to the United Nations have denounced the aggression of the URK and referred the matter to the New Security Council, which is set to vote on a resolution to condemn and sanction the URK next month.
For now, the Terracotta Army must plan to defend the region against the invasion.
Resolving this Issue: The Terracotta Army has until January 2223 to resolve this event. To do so, complete the following.
1. Accumulate 20 total effect on Hostility and/or Security checks, modified by Militarism DM. Each check takes 1d6 months.
Remember, not all checks are created equal.
A Woman of Action
Okabe Kimi, 38, is a difficult woman to find. For many in Japan, she is an urban legend and the tales of her deeds make for great story. For those who have come into contact with Okabe, she is a nightmare, a woman who for reasons unknown has embarked on a war with the Court of the Gunners. This is not the first person to try to raise her hand against the Court, but she is the first to have not been immediately swatted like a fly since the collapse of the Japanese government nearly a century ago.
Her continued resistance to the Courtly society the Gunners have cultivated in Japan threatens to undermine their project to keep the island under a tight lid.
Resolving this Issue: The Court of the Gunners have until January 2223 to resolve this issue. To do so, complete the following.
1. Accumulate 12 Effect on Posturing, modified by Cleverness DM, checks, 1d6 months each.
2. Accumulate 12 Effect on Security, modified by Scheming, checks. Each takes 1d6 months.
The Pirates of Mars
Martian Cooperative Industries is on the receiving end of a piracy campaign, targeting Cooperative ships in transit between Mars and Earth.
Resolving this Issue: The Cooperative must complete one of the following by July 2220.
1. Combat piracy by rolling Security 9+ or spending a point of Fleet.
2. Turn the local population and authorities against the pirates. Roll Public Relations 9+
Economic Depression Rocks NSF-C Mars
White Martians, citizens of a NSF-C enclave on Mars, wait in line. For the third time in as many decades, economic turmoil has come to this part of Mars. Sanctioned officially or unofficially by the rest of the sector, the NSF-C has struggled to keep their settlements alive and has been forced to coordinate and ration meager supplies and goods since the end of the Martian War.
The White Martians wait in line for the allotment, a basket of basic goods and necessities such as bread, soup, soap, and other sundry. The line has existed everyday in this part of Mars, varying in length but never disappearing altogether. This morning, half the settlement waits as the blue-eyed bureaucrats struggle to fulfill allotments.
Resolving this Issue: The National Socialist Front of Chanada must roll Economics 10+, modified by Greed, by July 2220.
