Casual player playing Australia on real world map - optimal number of cities on continent?

I automatically try to build as many cities as I can, but for Australia is it better to fit in 6 cities and be squashed, or am I going with too many?

Also do people normally settle in the tiny island just north?

4. Those cities aren't going to be that great anyways, at least not the Western ones. Don't be afraid to settle islands for luxuries.

I would build a desert city just for the era score. So maybe 5? That may be pushing it, though.

I like to build 5 cities on Australia. I move my first settler down west and south just a little bit to get my coastal bonus, and then I can squeeze in two more along my east coast, with one up near the Great Barrier Reef so I'll be able to grab those Spices. Then I build cities along my west coast, one at the very bottom and one a little ways along my north coast. Works very well for me.
