Catapults — what I am doing wrong?

And you have to have atleast a movement point to bombard, (although I realize a catapult, etc.. only get one, their turn cant be over is basically what I'm saying (this is obvious))

If you hold 'b', you need to left click on target twice. If you press 'b' and release, you will only need to click once. After all, target should be in range. For a catapult, the range is just the neiboring 8 tiles. Sometime there may be more than one unit in a target tile. After your bombarding, the unit with most hitpoints will show up. Thus you cannot see the effect after the animation.

The catapult is the "weakest" artillery unit, and it has a lower chance for success than any other land-based artillery unit (I'm not sure how frigates and ironclads stack up to it, though).

Now r u saying the it doesn't shoot, or it doesn't hit?
if it doesn't shoot, read the above replies and follow their instructions.
if it doesn't hit/do any damage.. hey join the club! cause the catapult is the most primitive siege unit, and its only normal for it to miss 9 out of 10 times. but if u upgraded it to a cannon or artillery, now that'll do some damge!!!

Figuered it out. Thanks, everyone. I got some artillary later in a game. Makes the catapaults look like Tonka Trucks.

and bombers make artillery look like match-box cars. Longer range, higher success rate...able to travel at sea (carriers) while attacking everything within range.

Well, I haven't gotten there yet — something to look forward to!

Also, bombers can get shot down, and can't move and fire the same turn.

You obviously don't use carrier tactics...while in a carrier, they can move and attack in the same turn...just move the carrier, then wake up the bombers....you can even move the carrier a little, use the bombers, then move it back...very nice for keeping a carrier safe within a stack of units.

Bombers can get shot down, that's true enough, but artillery can get captured...at least this way, you don't give your enemy a unit....and I think the range and power are a good trade-off for a little vulnerablility...if you're far enough ahead of the tech race, you might be able to use bombers with no interference from the AI's non-existant fighters.

Artillery is especially good at repelling enemy fleets from your coasts. If you have railroads, you can roll your arty wherever needed in a second and damage those pesky ironclads that keep trying to destroy your improvements. It doesn't sink them, but the AI always brings them back home when they have less than 50% HP. Gives you breathing time.

Protecting your Arty stacks from the AI is only too easy, however. And by the time I get bombers, I usually have a huge pile of Arty anyway - why not continue using it?

Why be picky? Use both...just saying that bombers are a bit more mobile if you're attacking from overseas...just plop them on a carrier and go...they're ready when you need them...however, artillery in a transport isn't nearly as effective before landing as bombers are.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

Yes...for defensive purposes Railway + Artillery + submarine = Dead enemy fleet.

I killed off a huge force of American Frigates (and several out of date caravels) by using a mix of bombers and artillery to kill them...bombers for long range strikes, and artillery when they came close. Bombers are a pain in the ass to move when they are city based, which is why I have all mine on carriers...well, all of mine amounts to 8, and I have two carriers sailing around the world.

Again, a mixed force allows you to react to anything, while a streamlined force is more efficient and cheaper...

And in C3C bombers have lethal naval bombardment, so combining artys with bombers is a very lethal to enemy navy.

I think I need to mod my vanilla to include that. Now if I were competant enough to do it, I could.

In the editor under units within edit civilization rules. Select the unit bomber. Then under Unit Abilities: ( bottom Left hand corner ). Crtl-left click both Lethal Land Bombardment and Lethal Sea Bombardment.
