CBob04 Achtung Panzer!

Just make sure that max research gains us turns. If a minimum run takes 50 turns and maximum is like 46 turns, go minimum and stockpile cash. Our first explorer should go west (very appropriate) to gain contacts and our next one can be for local exploration. Build order could be: warrior(explorer)>warrior(MP)> warrior(explorer)>settler>granary(if we have pottery). I'm ready to see how this goes.

After discussion, decide to learn Alphabet at full speed.

Greater Germany 3100 BC

This landscape did not meet my expectations. I was hoping for a lot more open land around Berlin but that is not the case.

Where do we put our next city?

CxxC is still a valid city planting scheme and all of the large dots follow that scheme. The small red dots indicate Bonus Grassland tiles.
Pink and Dark Blue are able to use one of the Wheats and need only one more road to be connected to Berlin. Building on Green would pop the goody hut safely; I don't see any special advantages to the Light Blue. Both need one road to connect to Berlin. White Dot is a poor choice, being on the coast and needing two roads to connect to the capital and Wines.

We have spotted another source of Wines (red circle). Planting a city on those Wines means it is always connected, so roading it to Berlin can be delayed. The hill gives it good defense, and it is on the coast.

Farther down south there is a river with flood plains and a Wheat for us to possibly exploit.

I must say I don't like any of the City Dots. They all miss the rivers. Dark Blue would be great 1S of where it is (except for the fog!). It could then pop the goody hut safely. From what is visible around the edges, it looks a grassland tile.

The real key that I noticed is WorkerA. We don't want to waste his turns. Right now he has not been assigned any task, so he is free to move where we tell him. South to Green, SE to Light Blue or follow the road around to the Wheat for Pink and Dark Blue.

In a solo game I would send Warrior01 SE to fog bust around Dark Blue and send WorkerA to road the Wheat in case the tile in question has issues. In an SG, I'll ask for help.

This is the end of my turnset, however.

Wait, isn't Dark Blue on a river? It looks like it to me.

Regardless, plan to settle on Dark Blue, then green, then maybe somewhere on the river to the NW. Dark Blue is the best 2nd city site because the wheat will give it rapid growth. Even with the city limit on (most of) this game, rapid early growth will help you get into a strong position.

I think we might not want to be strict CxxC so near our capitol, I'd rather settle on optimal spots for fast growth and shield potential. Tighter spacing is great for a game that might get to Steam Power. Our cities may all cap out at size 12, but they'll need more space to grab the best tiles. They should also all be on rivers where possible. Here is a quickie alternate. Some CxxC, some CxxxC.
Spoiler :

I will post further tomorrow to explain my reasons for each site.

Wait, isn't Dark Blue on a river? It looks like it to me.
The only place it touches the river is where the 4 tiles meet and I don't think that is good enough.

Now (now!) it occurs to me I could have right-clicked on Dark Blue. If it had any commerce at all, it would have been from the river.

I don't have a problem with a looser city spacing. I was just hoping for more plains and grass instead of the hills, forests and jungles we seem to have found.

Roster:
CommandoBob - just played
TheOverseer714 - UP!
Sasquatch - on deck
Tad Empire_0_o - warming up
ThinkTank

I opened up the game because I was mostly sure I was right, but I wasn't.

Dark Blue generates 2 Food and 1 Gold, just like the grassland SE of WorkerA. That tile is clearly adjacent to a river. The grassland 2SE of WorkerA only generates 2 Food and it is clearly not adjacent to a river.

Dark Blue, therefore, has access to fresh water.

(Now to try remember what situation led me to believe otherwise...)

The Dark Blue spot will be a huge productive & big city if there are more hills around the flood plains & the weat helps too but the disease will hurt alot

The Dark Blue from CBobs is a good spot. I will plant the settler there. I like most of mine but it will take some adjusting to not clash with Dark Blue. My red is fine, my blue is fine, but very low priority. I'm not in love with Bob's green, as it is a so-so spot in my opinion. I will post a screenshot after further exploration. With only 12 cities, every one needs to be well-situated and be a powerhouse, shield-wise, food-wise and gold-wise. Any so-so city should only be temporary, and disbanded once a better site is available. I have the save, and will play it out before diving into COTM46.

I have finished. I played up to turn 30. Here is the turn-log:
Spoiler :

Pre-Flight: CivAssist 2, Word running. Open the save, look things over. Move worker to Bonus Grass. Warrior01 steps 1 S and discovers Spices!:woohoo:
Warrior02 steps S also, more floodplains and the river delta.

Cities:
Berlin Settler in 4 turns, growth in 4. After micromanaging.

Civilian units:
Settlers 0
Workers 1
Slaves

Military units:
Warriors 2

Press enter=>

IBT:

3050 BC: Begin mining BG. Warrior 01, more Spices. Warrior 02 an oasis. A city here could be 10+fpt.

IBT: A wandering purple warrior appears out of the fog near Warrior 02. Meet the Iroquois, they are up Alphabet, CB, and Pottery. We have WC.
We can get Pottery or Alphabet. I trade WC and 10 gold for Alphabet, it’s the better deal.

3000 BC: Switch to Writing on minimum, we can’t get it any faster. We can buy Pottery pretty soon.

IBT:

2950 BC: turn both Warriors W. Warrior 01 finds more jungle.

IBT: Berlin settler=>settler.

2900 BC: Move settler to Bob’s dark blue dot. Lower lux slider to 0%, due to Berlin being pop 2.

IBT:

2850 BC: Explorers exploring, worker working. Another Spice. Nice resource clusters on this map.

IBT:

2800 BC: Leipzig founded=>warrior. Warrior 01 finds a coast. This continent seems to run north to south, not real wide.

IBT: Worker finishes mining the BG.

2750 BC: Begin road on BG.

IBT:

2710 BC: Warrior 01, more jungle.

IBT:

2670 BC: Warrior 01, more jungle. Warrior 02 clears more local fog. Raise lux slider to 20% so Berlin grows without rioting.

IBT: Leipzig warrior=>worker. Worker finishes road on BG.

2630 BC: move worker to water and road another wheat. Warrior 03 heads E to bust last bit of nearby fog. Warrior01 finds more jungle and swamp. Ewww!

IBT:

2590 BC: Begin road on wheat.

IBT: Iroquois steal the goody hut, but no barbs, thankfully. Mongol scout appears near Leipzig. They have Pottery and CB also.

2550 BC: I buy Pottery for 56 gold and 3 gpt from the Mongols. Warrior 02 spots light purple borders. Vikings? Maybe I shouldn’t have traded yet. That’s all for my turn-set.

Cities
Berlin Settler in 2 turns, growth in 2.
Leipzig Worker in 4 turns, growth in 4

Civilian units:
Settlers 0
Workers 1
Slaves )

Military units:
Warriors 3

Contacts: 2
Iroquois
Mongols

A couple pictures, my idea of a dot map, all spots are up to the team to decide.

Iroquois, Mongols and maybe Vikings in our neighborhood? Well, that should be a friendly bunch! Maybe the Zulu and Aztecs will show up too, and then we can have a tea party!

In all seriousness, the yellow dot looks like a great spot and would be my vote for the next settler destination. Another luxury hooked up at this stage in the game will really help our research and/or treasury. I agree with your other dot choices except maybe the red; we'll need a port or two but that space just seems like it would need a lot of chopping to become productive.

Shame about all the marsh and jungle to the west, but at least we're not in it and it'll serve to keep other civs from encroaching on us from that direction too fast.

 Yes, let's invite them all, agitate them all and watch them fight each other!

Yellow looks good to me, too. With a second luxury connected, our cities will be under control at size 3 without any MPs. Three cities would give us 12 units of free support, too.

Shame about all the marsh and jungle to the west, but at least we're not in it and it'll serve to keep other civs from encroaching on us from that direction too fast.
Good point. I was feeling blue about not being able to use that space, but had forgotten about the natural defense it offers, especially to horse based units.

If anyone does build in that mess of jungle, the towns will be small and weak. I agree that grabbing those spices is important, so maybe the build in Leipzig should be changed to a warrior as a settler escort, as barbs are likely to pop up and give us a bad day. I'm thinking that we have a good start going here, we just have to navigate the possible pitfalls.

Today is my wife's B-Day so I won't be getting to it todayfor sure, tomorrow probably. I'd probaby keep the worker build going and pop a warrior out either after the settler or worker. I'll understand better when I'm looking at it. We can always bring te close by warrior in to guard the settler.

Putting Civilization ahead of your wife's birthday is a mistake you will only make once, if you are so foolish as to make it in the first place.

Enjoy the day; we'll still be here.

Sorry all, I think I have to take a skip here. I was up in Kurtson SG so I played that one today and I'll be busy tomorrow for sure. Early St. Pats day party my way  Yes on a Tuesday night.... Tell me about it!

That puts Tad Empire_0_o UP

Just in case the old save doesn't work, here it is again:

I have had to do this in 3 SG's. Why did the site have to get hacked on my turns....

I had a peek at the save and everything seems good. Tad, it looks to me like you could probably lower the research slider from 20% to 10% for a few turns until our population grows or we have more cities; it won't affect when Writing is completed and we'll save a few gold.
