My CD exploded inside my computer. How did this happen?

How strange, can your drive still open? If not it might not have been the CD... What did it sound like?

It opened, and then the shattered pieces came out, and it sounded like a balloon poping.

I don't know. It made a slight whirring sound and then I heard the popping noise and then I opened the CD drive and the bits came out. There are still lots of pieces in the computer though.

I hope it wasn't an important CD. If it was I hope you have an appropriate back up

Nope!

OMG, that's hilarious!   Seriously, I laughed so hard when I read that my heart almost stopped! Hope it wasn't the CivIII disk!!

Sorry, I don't have any advice to offer *stifles laugh*.

Okay, now to be serious. You might want to open up the computer and remove any pieces of the CD still in there so they can't cause any future problems.

No it wasn't the Civ CD, and I thought CDs melt when they get too hot...

I have seen CDs shatter when not in computers, and it's not nessicarily because it got too hot.

As for melting, the information on the CD can be ruined if it gets too hot, but I don't think it actually 'melts'.

I'm scared to play civ now. I don't want it to explode...

They showed this on Mythbusters once... (Discovery Channel)

Did you treat your CD nicely? If not, it'll explode. ;)

If you jammed the CD in the wrong way (i.e., not settled "snugly" in the circle), and it tries to spin it really fast (52x), then it could break.

on a sidenote, have any of you ever tried to break a cd with your hands?

dont! they dont snap in 2 pieces, they goddamn explode in your face into a million pieces!

i did it once, and i was still finding bits of it, 6 months later!

One of my college professors told us about the time he had a CD held down by a clamp, and hit it with a hammer... The hammer found his head. ;)

Yup, I tried to do that once. They are hard to break too. When you bend 'em it almost touches sides before it breaks in half (into a million pieces).
Fun stuff! :mischief:

And I also have seen the Mythbusters episode on it. ;)

I think some of you might remember when I made a thread of how my old computer made a hole in my CD (ok, not a HOLE, hole but it burned through the reflective stuff so you could see clearly through it). That got me scared a bit.

It was treated very nicely, and it was in there for a while before exploding. I doubt it was over heating because the Civ CD has been in there longer and it didn't explode. I estimate about 1/5 of the CD is still in there from the pieces I recovered.
