Just wondering if the CD is required to play the game after the initial install. The reason I ask is because my computer is a laptop and the disk drive just completely died. I have an external drive I can attach but was hoping I wouldnt have to use this every time I want to play the game..... Can soembody who has it tell me if you always need to use the disc when playing?

Best way is to try out yourself. But I don't think there's any decent game released on the market this year that doesn't require the CD/DVD when starting/loading the game.

Yes it is. The game runs with disc 1, despite the fact that disc 2 is labelled "play."

Welcome to CivFanatics, Peppla.
Enjoy the game (although you need to have your CD/DVD in the drive to start the game),

And for your sake, let me add that I hope the CD protection system accepts your player to be an external USB drive. Some protection schemes are too paranoid to accept a USB device for verification purposes.

what is safedisc 4 protection? Does this mean it wont run on a disk drive connected to a laptop via usb?

Actually, most massively online games do not require it, since they can verify the authenticity by requiring you to log in to their servers to play, or they charge you a monthly fee :)

The cd is indeed required to play. There isn't currently any way around it. It would be nice, that way i don't have to risk scraching my discs up.

So even if I dont need the disc to play, can I install the game from an external drive connected through usb? Does the discprotection 4 prevent this? Thanks for all your help!!!!

That threw me off, too. Thought something was wrong with my cdrom drive. Eh...just threw the other one in my DVD drive and it works fine.

Does anybody know if this will work on an external disc drive? I am going to buiy the game shortly, but this is the only dirve I have. Don't want to buy it if it won't work!!!!!

I just threw together this tutorial for being able to play without your disc.

You'll need this program (which is rather widely used and generally scanned and assumed to be bug free, don't let its non-American origins scare you):

Anti-Blaxx - http://mb-lock.copybase.ch/English/Index.htm click the download link on the left and choose anti-blaxx 1.17.

Once this is installed and running you should see an icon that looks like a disc in the tray at the bottom right side of your screen. Right click it and choose settings. Leave everything alone except for these settings:

Near the bottom of the window, click the Protection dropdown and choose SafeDisc. A window will come up saying it couldn't detect copy protection, disregard it and click ok. To the right of that, click the three dots button to the right of the edit box labeled "Game:". Navigate to your Civilization4.exe file, this is by default stored at C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Civilization4.exe . After you click ok in this window a box will come up asking for the game name... this can be anything, but just type "Civilization 4" and click ok.

You should be done. Click Close (not Exit which quits the program). Rightclick the cd icon in the bottom right of the screen again, hover over Run game, then click Civilization 4.

This is such an extreme inconvenience to have to have the disc inserted all the time..it's worth violating the EULA over. I'm new to these forums and don't know whether this will cause me to get banned to write this, or whether the post will be pulled, or whether nothing will happen ;) (and I don't intend to break any rules, I just haven't seen any that apply to this situation). I hope it'll help some people out.

I went into panic mode when the 2nd CD marked as "Play Disc" wouldn't start the game.

No idea, version 4 of the safedisc protection is fairly new and new protections always seem to have problems with less mainstream hardware, so I'd say it's a gamble whether it will work or not.

A friend sent me a link to this post. Worked awesome! Thanks!!!

Just an addendum to my guide...Anti-blaxx 1.18 is out now so use that instead. Also, the "couldn't detect" window actually comes up after you choose the game exe location. Disregard it still.

Yeah I found that out myself after several unsuccessful tries.
