Censorship starting: GTA 5 ban in the works

You need to step back, take a deep breath, and reanalyze the situation Alps.

Because you overreact to everything. A deep breath may help avoid a heart attack, or something

...Actually, upon a moment's reflection, this is a statement more of stupidity than credible malice.

You mean, your own statements? You do seem to have gone off the deep end here. The struggle between free speech and censorship continues, and (IMO) the long term trend seems to be towards freedom. We should respect the Congressman's freedom to express his concerns as much as we do yours.

Because the first amendment says something about not making fun of people for their opinions? I'm not a government telling him he can't speak or I'll punish him. He's the one advocating censorship and I'm calling him stupid. Free speech is being used to belittle someone else's free speech. No inconsistency.

I'm not telling him not to say "GTA should be banned." I'm saying "GTA should not be banned, and you're silly for wanting it."

EDIT: I'm defining banned as "Not legal for sale or use by adults." I actually think the supreme court overreached by saying they couldn't ban selling them directly to kids. I'm in favor of not allowing games like GTA to be played by children.

I'm curious. Why exactly?

And at what stage does adult consciousness become immune to the effects (whatever they are) likely to be visited on children?

My unfiltered opinion? It's probably mostly harmless for children as well, but I can understand if society doesn't share my attitude and a restriction on children seems reasonable.

And adult consciousness isn't "immune" to anything. Adults consciousness has a right to make its own decisions. That right is limited in children.

Define children. I'm (sort of) in favor of not allowing them to under 10 kids (not like they would buy them by themselves anyway). But after that age the restrictions of PEGI/ESRB become plain bulls*it. There really is very little difference in maturity between a 13 and an 18 years old person. Neither of them get impressed about violence negatively, neither of them are stupid enough to replicate what they see (unless of course they have some mental problems). If they don't like what they see they don't play it, simple.

Now, personally my first game was GTA 2 at the age of 5. Then I've played Vice City at around 7, and then San Andreas at the age of 8-9. According to ESRB logic today I should be a violent criminal who steals cars, kills innocents and so on, but tbh I'm probably one of the least violent of my class mates

It's mostly a deflection tactic by the NRA. Fortunately, society at large doesn't quite seem to be biting. I think the absurd press conference with the references to ancient SNES games and obscure 10 year old Newgrounds *.SWF files probably did a lot to defend gaming, albeit not intentionally. I think it's like the "Phelps Factor" on gay rights.

Scapegoating: dogding the core of the issues and not attempting to challange the situration. Banning GTA 5 would not only go against the First Amendent but also will have no impact on criminal violence records.

+1 for credible insight and judgement!

The living fossils who run the country are making the mistake of assuming they are simply taking a few toys from powerless 15 year-old kids. They're actually dealing with a potentially organizable voting block. People base their political identity on their gun collections or their appetite for weed, so why is this any worse?

I plan to vote straight libertarian in protest if the Democrats back this. I'm willing to let a few overwrought comments by cornered pro-NRA Democrats slide, but if they start pursuing this in earnest they've lost me for good. They clearly don't envision the kind of freedom I thought they did if they are so petty as to snatch my game software from me.

I now hope they try and fail.

You want a law saying children can't play them, or a law saying children can't buy them? The latter would be far, far less serious than the former.

*Sorry, I mean "without parental permission." Ideally I should be allowed to decide my 12 year old is mature enough for Counterstrike. But, if the political reality is that or a ban for adults I'll take what I can get.

Luckily a GTA ban is not likely to happen.

You shouldn't compromise as much as you are. I get not selling to kids but otherwise, if the government can regulate what people are doing in their own homes, what can't they regulate?

Who could ban something so wonderful :(

South Park said:
Should we blame the matches?
Should we blame the fire?
Or the doctors who allowed him to expire?
Heck no!
Blame Canada! Blame Canada!

This felt relevant.

EDIT: didn't see this was the chamber, thought it was the rowdier part.

But yes, as others have said, this is a bad case of scapegoating. It's easier to blame video games, and to attempt to ban them, than to confront the fact that the issues in society run a lot deeper, and are a lot more something that can be blamed on elected officials's action (and, perhaps even more, inaction).

Because, whatever the reason for the shootings are...other countries have violent video games. They don't have the level of violence that there is Stateside. Is it the gun culture, and the fact that the NRA has been allowed to run unchecked setting up that culture, propping it up and boosting it, rather than being denounced and countered? Is it something related to the social inequalities in the US being worse than the rest of the world? The notion spread by politicians and people of all stripes that "If there's a murderer it's only the murderer's fault and changing the way we do things just won't cut it"?

If it's illegal in the States I don't think they'll bother to release it.

True, it just sickens me that other people want to control what I play. How petty can you get? The fact that it was even said out loud by a senator is bad enough to make me furious.

I'm not for gun control ( at least not as a hyperventilating response to Sandy Hook ) but at least guns are actually used in shootings. These rat ******** are actually saying they want to culturally engineer me by controlling what I can see. That's dehumanizing on a very, very deep level.

Jack Thompson tried this and now look at him...he is a joke...

Senators say stupid things all the time...James Craig in Idaho comes to mid...
