Basically, if you have a "non provisional" rating i.e. there's no 'p' after the rating, which happens when you've played at least 25 games, they 'protect' your rating against beginners.
So if someone gets an established rating and then loses to a porovisional player, the provisional rating goes up but the protected one doesn't go down. So that artificially increases the overall ratings 'pool', whereas a 'pure' rating system maintains a constant total.Players with established ratings will have their ratings protected when playing against unrated or provisional players. A protected rating can remain the same or go up, but never go down, even when the player loses the game. We implemented rating protection because we want to encourage our members to play against newcomers and help them establish their ratings without putting their own at risk.
