It was a subject of a previous thread but my searches haven't panned out. Anyhow: in C3C, I believe the default situation is to match you, the human player, against AI civs with roughly similar traits. I also know there's a way to fix that (in preferences, perhaps?) so that you don't get the same opposition every time, but I forget how to do that. Could someone remind me, please?

Pre-select your opponents. You can always randomize things by making a list of the tribes, numbering them, and then using dice throws to select your tribes. It's no different knowing your opponents on the first turn, since you can use the F10 button to see them in 4000 BC before you move a settler, worker, or scout.

Are you talking about Culturally Linked Starting Locations? If that box is checked, and you play the same civ, you will be surrounded by the same AI each time you play.

I think it is on the second screen when you start a new game.

There's a bug in that if you select culturally linked starts, you always pull the American culture group, so no matter your civ, you'll always start with the Incas, Mayas, Aztecs and Iroq.

I just uncheck it to randomize my opponents. or if you really want to play against certain civs, you can select the civs in the setup screen.

What an interesting journey "Culturally linked" has taken. In the first few releases of Civ3 there wasn't even an option to turn it off. That came only later and you could decided whether you wanted it or not. And now, now it it broken.
