The Civilization saga allows you to make history assuming that you are the rightfull leader "for ever". I suggest introducing 2 small easy changes.

CHANGING LEADER THRU TIME

You could change your leader traits every "generation". You could chose eather, another ruler, or "the son" of the ruler. Having "Napoleon" as a leader for 4000 years is not very realistic.... and depending on your objetive you might want a different kind of leader or as I have read in other suggestions, even personalize your leaders.

REELECTION

In certain governments (Democracy, Republican..) and depending on your performance (total happyness) you leader is eather reelected or change by force thru the election of the people. So for example if you are a Democracy at war with an agressive leader you might losse that advantage by lossing your "elections" and might have to stop the war do to forced change of a leader that might no be interesting for war.....

Maybe somebody might incorporate these small changes in a Mod.

I'm pretty much against anything that will needlessly and often break the flow of gameplay, realism be damned.

I like the idea of that happening to the AI leaders.

I think it could be added but maybe with an on/off switch on the menu screen.

Also, the reason why there is only one continuous leader throughout the game is to provide a common focal point. It is so you can always easily recognise rival civilizations at a glance. It is a relatively minor point of unrealism that does not affect the gameplay and should be seen as merely a way to make routine actions a bit smoother and prettier.
