Ok honestly..I rarely use chariots.

So we have a war chariot that is in need of a promotion. Should we give it Combat 1( 10% strength increase) or Flanking 1.( 10% withdraw chance)

With combat 1..our chariot would be Immune to first stirkes, and have a 20% withdraw chance in addtion to be 10 % stronger.( ie 5.5) ( edited thanks pajka.)

With Flanking 1..our chariot would be immune to first stirkes, have a 20% withdraw chance PLUS 10%( 30% withdraw).

Since we will be primarily fighting barbs with this chariot or scouting... Combat 1 makes the most sense to me. However if we were fighting and using the chariot to cut roads Flanking 1 makes the most sense since you would be closer to the promotions like Sentry and Mobility.

I am just trying to generate discussion and will leave the chariot unpromoted for now..

I think that Combat I should be used due to the other promotion options that it opens up.

Our War chariot is strength 5 ... so w/ combat I it'll be 5.5 ...
as we'll have probably more chariots produced, I'd say that most of them should be promoted to Combat I to get other bonuses later, but some of them could have Flanking I ...
If I would have chose now promotion for this first Chariot, I'd chose Flanking I. ... as it can gain some experience around to promote towards mobility

whoops..that was a typo... editted it now.

I hope to get more discussion..and will not promote the chariot yet.

Comabt is my choice

Flanking, flanking, flanking, flanking, and, again, flanking.

Force preservation is utterly essential in Civ4, and chariot units are particularly vulnerable.

Please, everyone, consider flanking. Our chariots already have an advantage over other chariots.

hmmm. you have a point there. I haven't used flanking much. I see your point Chill. by saying Flanking that 6th time has won my vote. :p (not really it was the last sentance ;) )

go with combat. we are only attacking barbs and other minor units for the time being, and we can always build another chariot. plus, it is better for the chariot to be stronger and win, then to stay weak and lose.

I don't particularly like flank promotions. My thinking might be totally whack but I feel by giving up attack strength you end up with wounded units that now need coverage rather than having them winning a battle outright. If they're only going to be used as skirmishers for collateral damage then I guess I could see flank but I envision pressing the enemy not skirmishing with them.
