Civilopedia:
^{Franks} - group of Germanic tribes that, about the middle of the 3rd century AD, dwelt along the middle and lower Rhine River. The Franks appeared in the Roman provinces around 253 and soon thereafter established themselves in two principal groups, the Salian and the Ripuarian. The Salian Franks inhabited the territory along the lower stretches of the Rhine, and the Ripuarian Franks lived along the middle course of the river. The Salians were conquered by the Roman emperor Julian in 358 and became allies of Rome. During the early 5th century, when the Romans retired from the Rhine, the Salians established themselves in most of the territory north of the Loire River.
^
^Under the Salian king Clovis I, founder of the Merovingian dynasty, the power and extent of the Frankish kingdom grew considerably. In 486 Clovis overthrew Syagrius, the last Roman governor in Gaul, and then successively subjugated the Alamanni, the Bourguignons, the Visigoths of Aquitania, and the Ripuarian Franks. Ultimately, the borders of his kingdom extended from the Pyrenees Mountains to Friesland and from the Atlantic Ocean to the Main River. Clovis was converted to Christianity in 496, and thus began the close connection between the Frankish monarchy and the papacy.
^
^After the death of Clovis, the kingdom was divided among his four sons, and for the following century it went through several divisions and reunifications until finally consolidated by Clotaire II in 613. Shortly after his death, however, the kings ceased to exercise any influence, and authority passed into the hands of the great officers of state, most notably, the mayor of the palace (major domus). The office of major domus existed in all of the Frankish kingdoms. In the eastern part, Austrasia, however, arose a powerful family, the Carolingian, which retained exclusive possession of the palace mayoralty for more than 100 years, ruling as monarchs in fact if not in name. In 687 Pepin of Herstal, the Austrasian mayor of the palace, overthrew the forces of Neustria (the western part) and Bourgogne, setting himself up as major domus of a united Frankish kingdom. His son, Charles Martel, extended the frontiers of the kingdom in the east and in 732 repelled the Moors in a decisive battle fought at a site between Tours and Poitiers.

^Frankish power attained its greatest development under Charles Martel's grandson, Charlemagne, who in his time was the most powerful monarch in Europe. On December 25, 800, he was crowned Carolus Augustus, emperor of the Romans, by Pope Leo III. Charlemagne's imperial title was later borne by the Holy Roman emperors until the early 19th century. His Frankish lands, more specifically, developed into the kingdom of France, which is named for the Franks.

Paladin, the UU:
This unit was done by Bebro
Replaces Knight and has one extra offensive point.

Your getting really good at hair and beards civ army! Keep it up...

good! BTW, BeBro has done a paladin unit, might want to use it...
Its tied right now (the game)... I better get back to the TV...

is this Paladin that u have suggested? In case it is the correct unit, it must replace Knight, not Swordsman like I configured

@bombshoo: thanks man! :)

He did say BeBro, but I haven't seen that unit. :hmm: most likely though it would be a knight :(

Yep.. Paladins were elite knights.

I don't think Bebro made a unit called Paladin. He did make several knight units.

However, wouldn't a Frankish Axe through be better?

That's very nice !! :goodjob: I was expecting this for a long time.

About the city list. I'm glad you placed Tournai as the capital as it is in Wallonia :D But, to be honnest, Aachen / Aix-la-Chapelle would be a better choice ;)

You should add Herstal ( original city of his familly ) and Nivelles ( monastery founded by his grand-mother -> important cultural influence ) in the top 10-15.

Yes, Aachen should be the capital. Like most warlords of his day, Charlemagne didn't really have a "capital", and his court simply followed him about. But he was in Aachen most often and regarded it as his base.

I agree that a Paladin is the best idea for a UU. I don't know exactly how historical such a unit would really be - the twelve Paladins (or "peers") of Charlemagne are prominent in the eleventh-century "Song of Roland", and are basically to Charlemagne what the Knights of the Round Table are to King Arthur. Charlemagne is obviously more historical than King Arthur, but I don't know about the Paladins. But I think they're a fun choice for a UU.

Oh, and that scientific leader should be either Raban Maur or Rabanus Maurus - you need consistency with the endings! If Rabanus is a scientific leader then you ought to add Erigena as well, a far more well-known philosopher of the time.

This is a fantastic leaderhead!

The paladin you linked to, is not a good choice, though. You need an early medieval rider. I would prefer a mounted ottonic miles.

A good friend of mine gives an example of that:
fn27_k16.jpg

This guy on the right is pretty much like what an ottonic miles (=knight) looks like:
Round Shield, chain mail on torso, open helmet. They also could be protected by a "spangenhelm":

spangenhelm.jpg

Most commonly, they would be armed with a spear and a spatha (=sword). The horses would not be protected by any armor and the riders were lacking stirrups, too.

Actually, Paladins were noblemen, known to be attached to Charlemagne's court. They were once as famous as the knights of the round table.
And that thing about BeBro having done a Paladin... :mischief: Well, my mistake. I just took one of his knights and adapted in my mod as a Paladin.
But, if you wish to do something like this:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=98533

These are his Knight packs. I recommend the Burgundian knight or the generic knight 12/13th century.
You may also wish to use Aluminiums modification of Kinboat's Crusader. Here it is;

That Paladin, made by Jimmyh has a terrible default animation, but you can use it as well... :)

cool, I have a lot of good suggestion here, so, I'll use a Bebro unit that looks like Paladin, I'l change his title to Emperor, I'll change the order of the city list and change the names of the scientific leaders list ;) and I must finish the ancient time and do the modern and industrial ones.

I did the correction ;) BTW, a player who is helping me with PMs told me she thinks Erigena has Scottish root, not Frankish, but she was not sure about this. Plotinus, do u know anything about this?

Maybe you should go with a Kaiser Bill look for the Industrial era?

That would be a really aweosome looking industrial age look! I'll second that :D Even the mustache style might look cool!

In the Industrial era he should have a Napoleanic Generals Uniform! So sayeth Goldflash

But aren't the Prussian and French uniforms similar, r they? So, I can use the Kaiser uniform as reference ;)
