I know it is probably too late to add it into the game but it maybe a great idea for Mods.
During the Age of Colonization the bulk of the colonies were either royal colonies or colonies started by trade companies. (i.e. The VOC, East India Company, Hudson Bay Company, Virginia Company, Etc.)
It would be cool if at the start of the game you could choose between being a royal colony or a trade company. Each would have different pros and cons
As a royal colony you get higher cross production, taxes, free soliders and free missionary every so many years.
As a trade company you have better relations with other Europeans, lower cross production, a base 25% tax rate from the start, but have to make money payments every few years
