In Civ 2 if you click on a square containing more than one unit the game pops up a screen with the names of the units so that you can choose which one you want.

I don't see a way to do that in Civ 4.

What I see is a list in the lower left part of the screen that lists the different units but doesn't give me a way to choose which one I want.

I used to Shift-Click, but then I realized that the little squares at the bottom of the screen with unit pictures are also clickable (just don't click a traffic light dot at the top left of each picture or a health bar at the bottom of each picture; nothing happens). Also, if you move your mouse over one it'll show you its experience, promotions, etcetera, so I prefer doing it that way now, and I find it much easier.

What CajNatlie said. That is the way to select a unit. You can also shift click several of the unit icons to select a group of them, without selecting them all. Once the number of units on the square grows large enough, you will find that trying to select them from the list on the left won't work because, depending on what version of CIV you are playing, they either won't all fit on the screen or they will be grouped by type after the first few on the list. Sometimes you have to find the "sweet spot" on the icon to select it. I have found that this is especially true ( and frustrating) if you are using BUG and activate all the unit icon options. Those options leave a very, very small "sweet spot". I ended up using only the BUG icon unit options that I want the most often to avoid this problem.
