I was wonder if there is a way of chosing the tech you want at the beginnig of a new age. I play with the babylonians and at the beginning of the industrial age they always chose nationalism which is a dead end tech and really doesnt do anything for me. i would rather have medicine or steam power. Also when i got the theory of evolution wonder and got two free techs it automatically choose the one i was working on that had 1 turn left as a free one which really pissed me off. Is there a way around this. anything in the editor to do that will change what tech is selected cause i coulld not find anything. thanks

Regarding tech at the beginning of an age for a scientific civ:

It depends on whether or not you have the 1.21 patch for Play the World (PtW). If you don't, odds are you will get monotheism, nationalism and rocketry as your free techs. This is actually a bug that causes the game to select those ~90% of the time. The 1.21 PtW patch gives you an even chance at getting the entry level techs in the era. You cannot, however, choose which one you want.

Regarding Theory of Evolution: it will always automatically finish a tech you are researching as the 1st free tech. The way to deal with this is to time your tech discovery for the same turn ToE will complete. Tech goes first, production second.

I often find myself researching replaceable parts while working on ToE. Say I have 5 turns left on ToE when I begin research on Rep. Parts. I deliberately research Rep. Parts at a 5-turn pace. I will complete my research, and then select Atomic Theory. Then, during the same turn, ToE will complete, giving me Atomic Theory and asking for the second freebie (Electronics, thank you very much). *Presto* no wasted research.

Thanks for posting that Arrian - I've always delayed my research one extra turn because I wasn't what the order was, but I kept forgetting to post here to ask.

Now I know. :)

thanks for the help , but considering i dont have PTW would that make a differnce on the tech at the beginning of the age. thanks

In civ III when playing a scientific civ you sometimes got to choose
an advance before you got your free tech. If this happened I choose the tech I don't want and then I get as my free tech one of the other 2 entry level techs.
You get to choose your tech 1st depending on how you got the tech that propelled you to the next age - wether spying, GLibrary, trade or research. (or Goodie hut?)
Each of these take place at a different time in a turn.
I have only gone to a new age by trading or research. I forget which gives the tech choice as I have not been playing scientific civs lately.

This is not true, neither for patched civ3 nor ptw (I don't know about unpacted civ3 though). Try choosing Nationalism as your research project when entring the industrial age, and you'll still get Nationalsim for free 90% of the time. What you say above is true for techs you get from goody huts though, maybe you're mixing the two?

I don't know the reason (maybe it is because I play without a patch), but I never get the tech I'm researching from the TOE.
Amask: Buy it.
