Hi all,
How exactly do I circumnavigate the globe to get the movement bonus?

I know that you have to be first, and I'm pretty sure I didn't see anybody else do it before me, but I took a ship all the way around and nothing happened. Of course, I might have missed the message saying that somebody else already did it, but I guess my question is this:

What counts as "circumnavigating"? Do I have to go from start to stop? I know that you can send 2 ships in opposite directions and have them meet...I've tried that before and it didn't seem to work either. Am I missing something here?

thanks

The fastest way is to use two ships, and send them in opposite directions. And don't automate, it's faster - turnwise - to do it manually, although it takes more clicks from you.
In reality, you need not sail the entire way, you just need to have explored squares on your map all the way around. So if you sail halfway and buy a map from some other nation on the new continent, you get the bonus. Provided the nation you buy it from aren't ahead of you in exploring the map. So don't sell your map to anyone until you see the Circimnavigating thing has passed. But buy other's maps if you can.

If you see nothing happening if you sail 2 ships in opposite dicrections, someone probably has done it before you, and missed it. Usually it's easy enough to notice. But you can get distracted.,

Yep, what he said. Bascially you want to create a horizontal ring of discovered tiles around the world, starting from once city or tile and linking back to that city or tile. Like he said, you can buy maps to aid you in doing this, just make sure you dont give your maps away or you could gift another Civ the Circumnavigation Movement Bonus

This is not what he says and it is inaccurate. Indeed you can get the bonus the way you describe it, but it is not needed to actually be able to draw a line faround the globe and to end in the same point where you also started.

In order to get the bonus, you need to explore at least one tile of every longitude around the globe. This means that you need not explore by starting in one point and mapping it so that you know how to start and end in that point. Let a column be the line of tiles running around the globe from north to south, then you need to reveal at least one tile in every column. It matters not where this revealed tile is. As long as every column has one line explored you will get the bonus as long as you are the first to accomplish that feat.

Ah-ha...I didn't know that about the maps. Maybe I've traded it away without even knowing it. Damn. I'll pay better attention next time and see what happens. thanks again.

Just to be sure, you cal always check the log. Press ctrl + tab to bring it up. You can scroll down and see if the message is there.

- So would this one work or not?

OK, now I get it. I would have wasted a lot of time sailing "down" to make the 2 boats meet together, when I should have just sailed "right" a couple of squares and done it. Doh!

Sometimes the AI won't trade maps or want a very high price for it. Another trick is to take an explorer on the caravel and when you meet an AI negotiate open borders and disembark in one of his ports. An explorer can run at 4 tiles per turn along his roads and that counts towards the bonus as well. I guess about 30% of the time it's my explorer that gets the bonus for me. They are great at poping isolated huts as well. This is the one moment in the game when an explorer is a really useful unit :)

The price the I charges you for the maps depends on the amount of tiles that the maps will reveal. Upon first contact they are quite expensive but as the game progresses they become less cheaper and cheaper as long as you yourself also explore more.
