City generates "NON" units

Hi peeps,

I'm new here, so forgive me if I'm repeating someone...

Anyway, I've just managed to create a city which allows me to support any unit from "NON" - costing no shields/food to support under any government.

And no, I haven't cheated or edited anything.

Basically, I did nothing different AFAIK when creating the city, and accepted the default name "Bristol." Now, whenever I create a unit in this city, or move a unit in and select "support from this city," the unit becomes a "NON" unit. i.e. It is not supported by any city, and therefore has no ongoing costs.

I have no idea why this should be. The only possible explanation I have is that it is city #129 to be created (all civs). Maybe there's a rollover of some type that happens at 128, but I would assume that someone noticed this before...

Unfortunately I can't upload the file because it's too big, but I can email it to anyone wanting to figure it out.

Cheers,

Ah, after a bit more searching, I've found that this is due to the fact I'm playing the original retail version and not the 2.42 version.

Welcome, lyceus. There is a page off the main CFC page that has patches for Civ2. Some other issues you may notice in the older version are unsinkable Triremes and Fighters that stay in the air for multiple turns. Are you new to Civ2, or returning with a bargain-bin purchase?

I've never tried naming a city NONopolis and see what happends... Go now to check it out

Thanks for the greets guys.

Naming a city NON has no effect - the units require support from that city.

I've been playing Civ2 on and off since its release. I just never got around to looking it up on the net. I thought Iwas quite good, and then I come across some of your stuff, and realise I'm about as good at Civ2 as flying a plane.

Anyway, time to gen up on some of these hints and tips - maybe I can get better.

I think the city supporting the unit is not determined by the name, but by a number, i.e. each city has a number, so naming a city NON won't effect it.

This happened to me in a recent high score game. It does depend on the number of cities you have. And you don't have to be near the 255 cities which is the limit (I think). I think I had something like around 200 when I started getting NON-units. Off course there was not much left of the AI so military units didn't do a lot of good, but having NON-engineers is great. They don't keep your city from growing to it's maximum size:D
