City Names

My favorite New New York  or New Old York...

Did you know the English can have York, but not New York?

I prefer names either made up, or regular words that I consider funny; like Globule. I've often used the words from the title of a Vonnegut short story collection: Wampeter, Foma and Grand Falloon (which he never divulged the meaning of, but I think they're his words for various farts). Or Lewis' Brillig, Slithy, Toves, Mimsy, Borogrove, Momgrath, Outgrabe, etc. Other than that, I like making up words like Floggula, Bombowl, Floosteria, Gumblata, etc. Coastal cities I'll use words like Blowfish, Carp, Flounder, South Flounder, etc.

You listen to them too? Wow, they're quite popular around here. Good game deserves good music.

Of course I do - look at my username ;)

A tough game indeed :D But as I said it happened once and I felt rather silly doing so.

Now - I'm too lazy to make creative names for my cities...

:)

Iol is a Carthaginian city, I think.

I like to play as the Iroquois, and since I am from western New York, I keep the "Indian-sounding" city names but replace the European ones with real place-names from NY that sound Iroquois.

If the Americans are not in the game, why couldn't they have New York?

They really should work on Chinese cities names for the game. I cannot match many names with the ones on the map.

I always like naming one of my northern tundra towns 'Cicely' after my wife's favorite old TV show 'Northern Exposure'. Too bad there are no moose resources. I suppose I could build Joel a Hospital to work in. But seeing as its never going to grow bigger than size 2, that would be a lot of shields to spend on a joke.

So, I guess an Airport for O'Connell is definitely out.

I suspect that even if the Americans are in the game, and New York is razed, the English will be able to found a city called New York so long as they beat the Americans to it.

I name my capital "the capital" sometimes

Hey, Tesla, Welcome to CFC! [party]

Stylesjl: Is it so hard to remember which one is the capital:D?

I rather rename my FP city, I doen't show on the map.

When the game starts suggesting "new X" I start coming up with my own names. Quite often the list then goes:
Thunderfall Town
Chieftess Town
Padma Town
Ainwood town
AlanH Town
etc. :p

French can have New Orleans, confirmed. So probably the English can have New York.

I only rename towns when they are staging areas for invasion forces or defense points. Midway... Fort Laramie... If the Defensive Point is under siege and hopeless it normaly gets renamed the Alamo...
Normly name ships more then I name towns- My first destroyer is always named Rueban James. First Cruiser Indianapolis. Most the time they don't met the fates of there real life counter parts...

I have a naming scheme that I usually use, based on the custom names I had in my first civ game. Each name corresponds with a certain type of city, so it's easier for me to remember what the city is meant for (high growth - producing workers and settlers, high military - raz and units, etc.)

However, I tend to need a pangea to do it this way, since archipelago and even some continents don't allow clear distinction. Instead, in recent games, I just go with the offered city name to speed up the game.

The only thing I rename is the Elite unit which spawned
a MGL.Most of the time this unit can be upgraded, but
still has its old name. It's very annoying after upgrading
for example all your knights to cavalry,a few are still called
knight.
If you want elite units that spawn MGLs to change names as they upgrade, as other units do, then don't rename it when the game gives you a chance to do so. Instead, hit the <ESC> key. The unit's name will then remain the same, except it will have an asterix next to it. And, when it upgrades, the name will upgrade correctly.

For example, if you have an elite Knight unit that spawns an MGL, when the game gives you a chance to rename it, just hit the <ESC> key. The game will then rename the unit "Knight*" or "*Knight" (I can't remember if the asterix comes before or after the name.) When you upgrade that unit to Cavalry, its name will automatically be upgraded to "Cavalry" just like any other Knight unit that gets upgraded.

my latest citys:

Newsdfh
Newfh
Newkloj
Newjholugo
Newwet
Newqwer

etc

I often load boats full of Cossacks and overwhelm one coastal enemy city, and from there I usually take the rest. But I always rename that city something like "Persian Deathtrap"
