Civ 2 CDROM

Can i play civ 2 without the CD?

Yes, if you can program and understand assembly language. All you need to do is edit the .EXE file and remove the calls to the CD ROM. Well, actually just replace the operations with NOPs. There are five of them in Civ II, I believe.

If you can't do this, it might be fun to learn.

If you don't want to do that, you can use a patch that others make and release (I don't do that myself, though). You can start with www.gamecopyworld.com

You can also do internet searches for patch files. You must match the exact version and revision of your Civ II, however. Don't use a patch that is not for your exact .EXE file! And always back up before you apply a patch.

There is another option, too. You can use a CD Emulator, if you have the hard drive space and about $49 USD. This lets you fool the program into thinking that a ard drive subdirectory is a CD ROM. There are several such programs in Retail stores and on the internet.

There are NO problems running plain vanilla Civ2 without a CD. Do a full install. If wanted, manually copy videos into right places after install (even full install won't do that). All explained in game manual. Later editions of Civ2 (Gold? FW?, CtP? ToT?) DO check for CD.
Music in Civ2 is RedBook (standard CD audio), so you won't get the music pieces. Unless you MP3-convert them and play an MP3 jukebox in the background...

Best CD emulator is the (FREE!) Daemon Tools(http://www.daemon-tools.com/)
You must have free disk space to host a full CD image, though. For us road warriors who don't want to have a CD in the laptop, it's heaven-sent.
