I have a friend who got me interested in civ by giving me civ 3, when civ 4 came out I bought it and he did not. It has now been almost 3 years since civ 4 came out and he still has not bought it and keeps on saying, Its not good, civ 3 is better, I'm not used to the graphics, stuff like that. He has a new computer too. Do any of you have friends like that, What should I say to try to convince him to buy it.

When CivV comes out, I'll probably say "Why does this get so many things wrong that CivIV got right?"

Why do you feel the need to convince your friend to buy Civ4? Personally, I don't care that much if my friends don't share every one of my pastimes.

Civ3 has enjoyed its golden age during the time of civ4.

Faster engines like the Prescott and the Cedar Mill along with major upgrades in L2 cache memory have continued to enhace civ3's perfomance on real empire sized maps
Same time Civ4 runs slower then any civ game on maps of comparitive size

Mods have made better gameplay and replay values and elimated expilots while at the same time CIv4 has been one long bug ridden ride...Warlord's Vassel bug to BtS's Spy expliots and onto excessive Pirate power that puts even CIv3's army advantages to shame.

You like adding Double the Pleasure mods to your civ3 game? Well Civ4 can't offer you the same. MAF or CTD has plagued many players who wished to conitnue this course.

Civ3 Graphics have got better while Civ4's have stayed the same 3d shame.
FOr example: 3 years and countless original Civ3 Leaderhead artworks later the civ4 side instead offers its users 20 more reskins of Gaundi..

The popular one line respone is 'Hey! its just a game. Let him play what he likes best. :)

I agree that it is sometime very hard to convince someone to take up Civ4 after they are so used to Civ3.

While Civ4 is much more modable as compared to Civ4 due to the access to its core game engine, it is also much harder for average modders who has no understanding for Phyton and C++ to do simple modding and changes. And of course graphic wise it is even harder to mod (at least on where you want something drastically different, reskin not counted ;) ) compared to Civ3. For one, I am still trying to find out if I can use the in-game great wall for some useful purpose :p . At least in Civ3 I have managed to mod the game to have some REAL great wall. :D

I guess it will still take sometime to have people like Bhuric to help us to experience the best Civ4 can offer (If you can still call it Civ4 after all the changes to its AI behaviour etc. that is ;) ). And for Civ3 I think it has already reach that state. (At least my idea of Great Wall was done in 2006 when Civ4 is already out :) ) So perhaps it will take some time before your friend will decide that Civ4 is mature enough for him to take an interest in?

Exactly. Civ III definitely has it's qualities. I missed out on Civ III when it was released and just came back to the Civ franchise with CIV. And guess what I did? I also got Civ III and played the hell out of it until I found out about and got annoyed by the many unfixed bugs of C3C. But even that did not stop me playing Civ III, I just moved even further back to PtW. ;)
So if he likes it, let him play what he wants!

I scanned this title on the front page, had to stop by and see who said what ;)

I`m buying a new computer tomorrow (got my Visa today, yay!), and guess what? I ain`t buyin` Civ4, I`m sticking with Civ3.

When they get rid of the stupid 3D gfx or atleast make it look decent, not like something kids cut out of cardboard, I might consider civV.

Civ 4 was a massively nerfed version of Civ 3, and has been nerfed more and more in every patch. Its very boring because you can barely vary your army without getting completely smashed in a war.

CIV IV is miles ahead of CIV III in my opinion.

The major Civ 3 war problems;
  1. AI inability to use armies
  2. AI inabilty to use artillery
  3. Stacks of doom

How were these fixed in Civ 4?

  1. Removed completely
  2. Dumbed down and made essential for any non-Praet war
  3. Worse than ever

Also, there is no way to eliminate WW in 4 if you choose to go on a never-ending rampage in a particular game. Also, because of the graphics requirements Firaxis made the game less... epic, because you own a small civilization with a small army or have your army go on strike and being unable to research at all.

I may just have to dust off my copy of Civ3 and give it a go. I think I burned myself out with BtS over the last couple of weeks.

If only there was a new version of Colonization to distract me.

Me too!!! Col 2 with CIV 3 graphics, maps and gameplay would really rock!!!
Trouble is, it's probably only old geezers like us who even remember Col.
Anybody under 25 has either never heard of it or tried it. Shame. They
prob. think Civ began with Civ 3 as well. Remember Fantastic Worlds or
Conflicts in Civilization. More technology doesn't necessarily mean better.

Bah I am 27 and played Colonization. Fantastic Worlds.. I loved that expansion. I was addicted to the atlantis scenario for some reason.

You might want to check out AD 1701. Not exactly Colonization, but same idea. I also miss colonization, I played it a lto when it came out but then loaned ti to a friend who moved away without returning it :(

civ3? I bought it but never got around to playing it. things like wife and children started getting in the way (what was I thinking? Now I just let her go to bed alone while I stare at diplomatic screens LOL)

It's funny coming across this thread. I was going through some boxes a couple of days ago and came across Civ 3. This conversation has inspired me to load it up and play a game or two.

What are the unfixed bugs in C3C?

The biggest and most annoying one:
Any AI that accidently stumbles upon one of your submarines (or any other invisible unit) automatically declares war on you.

I also remember stuff like:
If culturally linked starting positions are selected, Aztecs, Inca and Maya are very likely to be your neighbours.
Stealth airstrikes do not work properly.
Capturing princess does not work.
Removal of radio causes strange advisor recommendations.
