This is really getting me down, i have xp home, i can load and play civ 4 for a short time and its fine, but after playing the game for more than half an hour, it just closes. No error message occurs and my computer does not close down, it just acts as if i have shut down the game manually.

Help?:(

The event viewer doesn't say anything out of the ordinary, but i couldn't find the event manager. is it the same thing?

yes it is.
:hmm: could you enable logging in the civilizationIV.ini then crash the game and post the contents of the logs directory (my games\sid meier's civilization4\logs)
logging is enabled by setting all items with log in their name to 1 in my games\sid meier's civilization4\civilizationIV.ini
you can attach files (e.g. a zipped version of the logs directory) by clicking on go advanced and then on manage attachments :)

Sorry about the time gap, damn thing won't crash when you want it too, what exactly am i looking for in the logs folder?

Please people help me! the game freezes without error! I have civ4+patch1.72. WinXP+SP2. AMD1,6
logs attached

second download (DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer) wouldn't go, seems the windows is not genuine((. any hints??

:hmm:
you'll need an updated DirectX 9c for 1.74 to run - I am sorry I cannot help with cracked software. 1.61 would be the way to go for you to run Civ4 then (the first download).
Now you game freezes might be due to a lack of updated windows drivers - which also require a genuine windows version - so it might not help, but patching is always worth a try...

well your civ version includes this:

[3108.312] VERSION: Save Version: 100

the save version of 1.74 is 103 - so it definitely did not patch.
are you using a digital version of the game by any chance?

why you think it could happen? i have a disc of game given by a friend, it apparently does not like as a genuine...

well, is it a genuine disc? if not the patch installer might detect this (I don't know) and abort. At the same time the windows updater apparently does not recognize your windows version as genuine - if it is in fact a genuine install you should contact microsoft about this - and all programs like Civ require a somewhat uptodate operating system which won't be the case in your machine so this might be the cause of some troubles also.
Its hard to troubleshoot a machine that uses only genuine software - and neigh impossible to do so on machines with cracked software (also anything into this direction would be against forum rules - so I cannot discuss non-genuine software problems anyways).

and you are absolutely right, we shall not discuss such kind of problems here. Apparently though, the problem still persists, and most probably it does not relate to genuineness of software.

We are having sudden problems on my network playing multi, where the desktop/main computer keeps crashing the game. Getting a "Failed to allocate memory.....blah, blah, blah reduce your graphics settings.....blah, blah"

Confusing as this computer never used to do this. I believe it has been saddled with a virus though, so I think anything could result from that.

Any easy fix? This has rendered multiplay unplayable for us, so that stinks.

My other problem is I am at a loss where this .INI file is. I see no such animal in my Firaxis/Civ 4 folder. I recall having the same problem finding it last year, but did find it with help. What am I missing? Should this be that hard to find?

Edit: Sorry to hijack this thread, but I tried to search but the search feature here had me swearing out loud so I gave up. I mean, how is "failed to allocate memory graphics" not 4 words? Grrrr.

the ini file is in \documents and settings\<username>\my documents\my games\<gamename>\
where <gamename> is Civ4 or warlords or bts
there is a host of threads regarding the failed to allocate video memory - if you search for it don't include the "to" it does not like words with less than 4 letters, or use the google search box above it :)
as you are here: did you get rid of all malware? are your card drivers uptodate? what graphics card do you have?

Ok...thanks....I don't even remember looking there, for that file last year. Hmmmm. Anyhow, found it now.

Thanks for the tip on the search.

As far as drivers go...heck, I don't even recall. I've had this computer for 5 years, and forget all the specs. It always worked for Civ 4, so something mucked it up now. No specs or drivers have changed, is the main thing. I have had plans to wipe the computer and start from scratch, but have not had time.

could you post your dxdiag results?
in the windows task bar:
click start - click run - type dxdiag - hit enter - click save results

below the reply box:
attach the saved results as an attachment to a new post - click on go advanced - click on manage attachments - attach that file

I reinstalled Civ4 and patch 1.74, updated ATI drivers, everything looks fine... but still freezes!!! please see logs!
