For the last 2 weeks my civilization 5 has been bugging out and booting me out of the game. The last 3 times were very annoying for I am trying to get the cultural victory and the dominating victory. Late game bug outs cause my game to continually bug out allowing me not to finish the game. I have 2 saved games where I can not continue because it bugs out on another civs turn every time I try to reload. I have looked for patches and fixes and have not found anything. I am running windows 8. can anyone help me with this severely annoying issue. I hat wasting all that game play time just so late game can bug out and make the game what appears to be unplayable.

Thanx

The bug is a message that comes up and says Something has caused your game to stop working windows is closing it and will try and find a fix.

First, verify your game cache (Steam --> Library --> Right-click Sid Meier's Civilization 5 --> Properties --> Local Files --> Verify Integrity of Game Cache). If that doesn't help, are you using any mods? A Mod might have bug or, if you are using more than one mod, be incompatible with each other. If you aren't using any mods, please attach your DxDiag file. How to do so is explained here. Also attach your save files that illustrate the problem. Thanks!

I am not running any mods. I dont runmods because I dont want them to cause these kind of problems. Just had yet another game go out on me 5 minutes ago. Did the verify it didnt work. I got an error trying to upload games saying a security token was missing or something.

Are you running Civ 5 in full screen but then clicking off of Civ 5 to go to your browser or any such?

Thanks for posting your DxDiag. I don't see any problems there. Try zipping your save file and then uploading it. Do you still get the security token error message?

And welcome to CivFanatics! :)

When you verified the local cache in steam what happened? If it downloaded a file, you have to keep doing it until it gives the message "all files successfully verified".

At the very bottom of the diag, there was another program that caused a crash. If something happened while playing Civ5, then there could be multiple corrupt files, and until they are all corrected, it will keep crashing.

Joker - Yes I have alt outted on some of my games with civ 5 in full window mode. But when I came back to game it was still working the crashing usually doesnt occur until late game.

Timtofly - Well yes I thought that had waited for the all validate message but I did it again today just to be sure and it still bugs out.

Petek - Yes apparently zipping worked. Game labelled 1 crashes on Dido's turn every time. Game labelled test crashes as soon as I click end turn.

I dont know if it matters or not but I bought the Civilization Complete edition. Thanx for taking the time to read my responses and offering some assistance. I hope this issue can be figured out soon.

Both of your save games also crash for me. I think the problem is that the games have become too complex. The save files are in the 6-7 MB range. We've seen similar problems in the past with such large files. You might try lowering your video settings, but I doubt that will help. In new games on huge maps, try limiting the number of civs to 12 and the number of city states to 24. If you can complete such a game, then you can try adding more civs and city states.

(For future reference, your save files were too large to upload. The size limit for Civ 5 save files is 2 MB, but you can go up to 10 MB for zipped files. It would be nice if the software would give a more informative error message.)

Could it still be a corrupted save issue? Is there a way you could go back and see where the size of the files may have made a noticeable jump in size? You may be able to replay from the file before the jump in size. My files have made it to 4-6 mb. I am not sure about the complexity though. I have control of every city on a huge map with all the settings maxed. I suppose it is possible that if there are still several more civs around it may add to the complexity and file size some what.

So basically because I used max civs and max city-states the game loses information and causes a crash. I dont like to rush through civ games I always play marathon and try to have some fun with manipulating other AI civs and getting some angry. I had a fun game last night where attila attacked me and next thing I knew he was getting attacke dby all the civs marked friendly. Attila took down 2 of my cities but got all his taken down by the Inca, Persia, and Spain. I enjoyed watching him lose:) I shot some arrows in there here and there. Anyway thank you for your support on my issues guys. I appreciate all the advice and help given. Enjoy your games:)

Because so much is going on complexity wise while playing in the late game stages, if a crash happens a file may become corrupted. It may not be noticeable at first, but when that file comes up at a critical point, it will cause the game to crash.

Normally though one can go back to a save and salvage the game. Finding the save that is not corrupted or affected by a corrupted file may be the hardest part.

If you keep playing the way you like, and it crashes, you may want to verify the local cache and make sure all the files are working properly before reloading the game and continue playing. I don't think that playing with max civ and city states is the issue. You may want to turn down certain high end graphic settings like texture and shadows, when playing the last 50 turns to see if it prevents the game from crashing. Or at the least have the internet and any programs you do not need running closed, and run only Civ5.
