Civ 5 for £9.95 - no longer available

lolz!, well good deal for the guys that noticed the cheap price and ordered a copy, whether or not they will cancel all deals made for the price that was accidentally put up is another matter, let us know guys if they cancell the pre-order and give you back your money, if not, congrats on getting it cheap, zavvi will either choose to eat the lost profits from posting it incorrectly or cancel deals made at the incorrect price.

They'll lose more money by cancelling the few orders that were made, I think.

I have the site bookmarked now. If they screw me, I won't be shopping there again and I'll be not recommending the site to others.

Jesus Christ...

we come across a crazy deal and you guys alert the authorities...[/QUOTE

They probably got shut down because of this guy.

They most likely were told that they were not allowed to discount it.

Why would it have been a typo? It had a % off along with the price.

Well as of this moment they haven't upped the charge on the site and nothing shows up on my holds except them requesting .02 cents which is weird...

probably an automated system

could you imagine how long it would take to update prices if you had to edit all that stuff manually?

Depends how many people decided to "like" them from the little cheap deal they offered,

I don't "like" them, right now I'm neutral. They offered a very good price and I ordered, so at least they got my attention.

I know they CAN cancel the order for whatever reason because that's part of the terms of sale, but that would be a shady thing to do and then I'll go from neutral to negative.

Well, no. I didn't make the order. I have trouble believing they'll honour that transaction, but if they do then you're a lucky person.

Got my fingers crossed.

My contingency is an email I've already written out for if and when that happens. They are British so the outrage and veiled threats are very polite.

I once tried to buy a game from EB for 50% off the marked price of 19.05. At the counter they asked for 9.95 insisting the sticker was wrong and the price in their system/catalogue was 19.95. I'm not sure of the legalities but if this store was stingy enough to insist on 50 cents I'd imagine another store would reasonably try to keep 30 pounds. :)

I'm in Quebec and they got pretty tough consumer protection laws over here.

If a price is labeled (even in error), the law says they must honor it. Obviously that wouldn't apply when dealing with a company in the UK, but I'm still hopeful that they will ship it.

What about this as a possibility? -

It wasn't a typo, and Zavvi are actually happy to sell it at £9.95. But since this thread started, 2K contacted them and told them it wasn't "in their interests to sell Civ V at that price if they wanted a steady supply" of the game. (2K have to consider their other customers after all).

If something like this happened, I suspect Zavvi would be happy to honour their existing £9.95 pre-orders. (Here's hoping anyway ;))

Whether it has been a typo or not, 2k may have contacted them and told them that they would not be supplied, if they would not follow 2k's pricing "proposal", most probably due to "bottlenecks in the supply chain".
Remarks like these often are dropped during the negotiations between vendor and customer - and often are perceived...

Now imagine how aweful it would have been if that would have not been brought to 2k's attention immediately..

It is like that in a lot of European countries as well, although stores do not have to honour each and every deal. If a consumer cannot reasonable be expected that the game is supplied at this price, then the consumer is often forced to check the validity of the deal. That is, the consumer must do some research to see that the offered price is indeed meant to be cheap and not a mistake. If you took the trouble to indeed validate the deal, then you are protected should the pricing be wrong in hindsight.

All in all I would not be surprised if the store did not honour this deal. How many people out there did even try to see if the deal was valid? Everybody held their breath and ordered, keeping their fingers crossed... It seems to me like everyone could see a cancelation coming right away, and in all earnest everyone sees that there is something wrong with this deal. One may then argue that this deal was not made in good faith from the side of the consumer, and therefore the consumer forfeits the proitection that would be rightfully his had he been in good faith.

To make a long story short, no you do not have the consumer protection that applies by law, and the deal can be canceled by the store. And the will, at least they are likely to cancel the deal. As we say in Holland, helaas pindakaas. :D

On a sidenote, I graduated from lawschool last week. :D

9.95 means Zavvi is losing money there, so it was either a mistake or a marketing strategy to get attention and customers. I dont see why would 2K care about Zavvi losing money.

I think the more probable one is that it was a mistake when typing the price. Zavvi has lot of special offers on video-games, savings up to 75%, but all of them are for games from 2008 or older.

Eh? Why would 2K care what prices the games are sold for? I bet 2K would be thrilled with stores offering the game for $1. It means the game gets sold way more often because I for one would also buy copies for all my friends. The price that the store offers the game for needs not be related to the prices that 2K asks of the vendor, so 2K would still make money by charging the vendor the normal price for the game. So whatever the price the vendor puts on the game, 2K get's it's money and the vendor loses money, not 2K.

If I was 2K I would be fine with this, as long as the store paid full price to receive copies then I would be fine if they threw away their own money after that. If they want to give the game away then by all means...
