GORYEO - EXPLORATION AGE CIVILIZATION

Unique Ability

Negotiation of Seohui: Gains Influence for every Tradition slotted into the Government. Gains a free Byeolmuban once each Diplomatic Endeavor is completed.

Attributes:
  • Economic
  • Diplomatic

Spoiler About Ability and Attributes :
Negotiation of Seohui

He confuted the Khitan general Xiao Hengde by proving Goryeo is the successor of Goguryeo, and made him to withdraw. This was not only done by his negotiation, but also by the insight about the militaristic circumstances. This is one of the most symbolic event of Goryeo diplomacy against the continental empires. Like this, Goryeo strived to keep its traditions of the ancestors and the Buddhism culture, by managing the national defense and the diplomacy at the same time.

Attributes

The Economic one represents Goryeo's flourished international trades based on the trade ports like Byeokrando. The Diplomatic one represents Goryeo's huge presence over the East Asian diplomacy during the period of divided China.

  • Tradition - Goryeo Cheongja: International Trade Routes gain Gold for every Warehouse in the Origin Settlement.

Spoiler About Civic Trees :
Civic Trees

Unlike Silla, I reduced the number of Civics and Traditions itself but provided some Masteries instead. Those grants more bonuses for defense and Victory Conditions directly.

Hojok (Local Powers)

In the Goryeo era, a lot of local powers that carried from the age of Three Kingdoms took important places in the authority of each area. They controlled local economy, government, and even military. The newborn Goryeo dynasty couldn't defeat them all because of the lack of the powerful authority of king, so it acknowledged their positions and allowed to keep those for them. Despite the effort of kings to control them like matrimonial alliances and bestowals of royal surname, the system was unstable and it caused the political chaos on the early Goryeo. So this Civic have a Happiness penalty from Towns, but give benefits in return as the Gold bonus, Seoktap and Manwoldae.

Patriotic War

We can't talk about the Goryeo history without the wars against Khitan, Jurchen, and Mongolia. Because these long struggles to defend territory from the invasion of the nomadic empires bound Goryeo people together and formed the unified national identity. Through those wars, people slowly abandoned their old Goguryeo/Baekje/Silla indentities and defined themselves as the Goryeo people - the Korean people.

Tradition - Cheollijangseong (Wall of a thousand ri,)

The long chain of Sanseongs along the northern border of Goryeo. The name of Cheollijangseong was definitely came from the Chinese Great Wall - Mallijangseong (wall of 10 thousands ri), but the Korean version was not the actual long line of wall. They built plenty of Sanseongs and constructed the cooperative defense sysyem of them.

Belief - Tripitaka Koreana (Palmandaejanggyeong)

During the war against the Khitan and Mongolian invasions, Korean Buddhism need to do something meaningful to defend country as the leading ideology of Goryeo. And it resulted in the concept of "Patriotic Buddhism", they focused on both side of contribution toward the wars. They volunteered to form the monk soldiers for the physical fight, and at the same time, they started the long effort to complete the printing blocks of Buddhist scriptures (Tripitaka) for the spiriture fight. Although these struggles couldn't finally defend Goryeo from Mongolian hordes, the finised Tripitaka Koreana as the 81,316 printing woodblocks became one of the greatest legacy of Korean history. In my design, Goryeo can sculpt these Daejanggyeongpan as the unique Relics which can progress the Cultural Legacy Path. Will you accept the idea of Unique Belief?

Byeokrando (Byeokran Port)

The most representative international trade port of Goryeo. A lot of merchants mainly from China traded Korean luxuries like paper, pine mushroom, ginseng and celadon. Some of them was even from Arabia, and they are the ones who called Goryeo as Korea for the first time. I originally planned to provide two Traditions of Ginseng and Celaron, but I decided to give ginseng to the ability of Manwoldae wonder - as the Ginseng Agreement from the base game Emile Bell.

Tradition - Goryeo Cheongja (Korean Celadon)

It was the very famous luxury production in the region, especially with its unique and beautiful color. I once tried to give exact bonus toward something like clay pits, but I don't know well about them, so I just picked the Warehouse buildings.

Unique Infrastructure

Daesachal: Unique Quarter. Grants Gold for Happiness of the Settlement.

Seoktap: Unique Happiness Building. Grants more Happiness when both Population of the Settlement belive same Religion. Can be purchased in Town.

Janggyeongjeon: Unique Culture Building. Grants a Great Work Slot. Grants Religious Pressure for every Great Work it has. Can be purchased in Town.

Spoiler About Infrastructure :
Daesachal (Grand Temple)

The Buddhism temples of Goryeo were not so much extravagant compared with Silla's actually, but those were still enough to call them "Grand Temples". The splendor of the temples represented by the Gold bonus from Happiness. And with the Eupseong Tradition, your Daesachal will become a solid Sanseong and take the enemies down.

Seoktap (Stone Pagoda)

Pagoda is the typical monument of Buddhism, and the sanctum which enshrine the sarira of Buddha or great monks. Countries in East Asia adopted this sacred tower with each unique style: the brick pagoda of China, the wooden pagoda of Japan, and the stone pagoda of Korea.

Janggyeongjeon (Hall of Scriptures)

Maybe it makes you to recall the famous Janggyeongpanjeon of Haeinsa Temple, the archive site of the Tripitaka Koreana and the UNESCO heritage, but actually the building was built in Joseon dynasty. In this case, I was mostly inspired from other Janggyeongjeons that archived some printed Tripitakas, and the Gyojangdogam of Heungwangsa Temple which fulfilled the scurlpting project of Tripitakas. In the game design, this is such an almighty building that provides Slots, Religious Pressure, and the Project for unique Relics. And this bonuses not only affect to itself, it makes Seoktap more powerful too.

Unique Civilian Unit

Eungsa: Unique Scout Unit. Increased Sight Range. Can be activated at the neutral or friendly Civilization's territory, then removes the Unit and gains Influence.

Unique Military Unit

Byeolmuban: Unique Cavalry Unit. Increased Combat Strength against Cavalry Units. Automatically Fortifies after Attack.

Associated Wonder

Manwoldae: Gains an unique Diplomatic Endeavor called 'Ginseng Agreement' that grants Food to both Leaders' Capital. Gain a Military Attribute Point. Must be placed on Rough Terrain.

Starting Biases:
  • Navigable River

Spoiler About Units, Wonder and Biases :
Eungsa (Hawk Trainer)

Goryeo was also famous with its hawking tradition. The well-trained Goryeo Hawks (Songgolmae) were truly valuable in the regional trade, and Chinese and nomadic empires continuously demanded to give them those hawks as tributes. Eungsa is the specialist who trains hawks. I made it as the unique scout unit with an increased sight, and it can be rewarded with Influence from removing it abroad. Not only representing the tributes, it allows you to feel free to sent them far away without worrying to take them back: you can just remove and exchange it with Influence.

Byeolmuban (Task Forces)

Minister Yun Gwan suggested to found Byeolmuban, the Task Forces only for the special mission to destroy Jurchen tribes intruded the border area. They were the mixed forces of cavalry (Singigun) and infantry (Sinbogun). Singigun drove out the Jurchen cavalry first, then Sinbogun took up and fortified the area. Goryeo once succeed to occupy the "9 fortresses of northeast", but soon it lost the area because of some fatal strategic failures. Regardless the result, Byeolmuban was the most unique military organization of Goryeo, so I chose it. Singigun is represented by the cavalry unit with anti-cavalry bonus, and Sinbogun gives the auto-fortification bonus.

Manwoldae (Goryeo Royal Palace)

Do you know the royal palace of Goryeo didn't have a unique name of it? Unlike Wolseong of Silla or Gyeongbokgung of Joseon, the Goryeo royal palace was only called as "the palace" during the entire dynasty. After the fall of Goryeo dynasty, people started to call the ruin of the palace as "Mangwoldae" which means the place to look up the Moon. And then the name finally became "Manwoldae." I adopted the ability of Emile Bell in the base game, only changed the Attribute point to the militaristic one.

Starting Biases

The Navigable River represents the Yeseonggang River, the lifeline of Gaegyeong and the location of Byeokrando.

TAEJO WANG GEON

  • Memento - Dropped Brush: Gains an unique Diplomatic Endeavor called 'Capital Relocation' that grants a chance to change the Capital and Government to both Leaders.

Spoiler About Taejo Wang Geon :
Wang Geon, Taejo of Goryeo, is who deposed Gung Ye from the throne of Taebong and then founded the Goryeo dynasty. He finally reunified the Later Three Kingdoms of Korea submiting Silla and Later Baekje. You may already know him as the Leader of Korea in Civ 3 and 4, Wang Kon. His unique ability is a metaphor for the Heritages of the Three Kingdoms of Korea: Pastures/Woodcutters represent Goguryeo with its semi-nomadic nature, Farms/Plantations represent Baekje with its vast farmland, and Mines/Quarries represent Silla and Gaya with their brilliant goldcraft legacy. And there is a small detail that he is the only Korean Leader who don't unlock Joseon Civ.

His Agendas Hunyo Sipjo (10 principles) are his testaments, which encouraged the promotion of Buddhism but warned about the excess of it at the same time. And his Mementos came from his famous anecdotes.
  • The Taebong King Gung Ye once interrogated the minister Wang Geon about the treason. The royal scribe Choi Eung intentionally dropped his brush to approach to Wang Geon, and furtively advised him to recognize the guilt and beg for forgiveness. Wang Geon followed it, and he survived from the affected wrath of Gung Ye.
  • Wang Geon once led his Taebong troops to supress Later Baekje domain around Naju. He was so thirsty, so he asked a lady he found around a well to give some water. She handed him over a cup of water, but floating one willow leaf on it. Wang Geon wondered why she did it. She answered that she worried about that he may choked on water while he rush to drink it. Wang Geon adored this thoughtful lady so they married. She is Queen Janghwa, the daughter of Naju Hojok and the mother of Hyejong - the 2nd King of Goryeo.

Associated Civ Choices:
  • Silla
  • Han
  • Unlocks Goryeo in Exploration Age.
